    It was a lovely year for rap imo and the first in a while where I really felt like all areas of rap and hip hop got shine in some way, just a tremendous outpouring of art during an insanely bad time

    Exactly, the cross-regional/cross-continent scope of great music that actually got a ton of love this year was especially choice

    And not in a corny “soundcloud has made regional rap nonexistant!” way, detroit s*** was not coopted, drill almost but not, hyperpop still bubbling under, etc. If you liked big blockbuster rappers you had plenty, if you hitched your horse to an indie bandwagon they probably blew up or got major attention this year, a lot of trap rappers came into their own from ATL to Memphis, all regional drill styles had good years (RIP Pop) - and bandcamp stars f***ing ate.
