The type of music that gets popular these days feels like the typa s*** x started when he was in his moody melodic bag. I wanted to call it snippetcore and found out someone else already called it that but I feel like it’s a good phrase to describe it. X made it popular to make songs barely over a minute with moody atmospheric themes that would then be used in edits. This feels like more or less the founding principle of music that seems to go viral these days particularly on sites like tik tok.

I’ve been peeping corecore and hopecore edits and the type of music they use. Also a lot of right wing videos. I remember last year I learned about the song after dark by mr kitty and s*** like that. But on some level the most popular songs have often been random one off acts and stuff that gets forgotten a bit over time like the euro pop s*** from the 90s and 2000s.

    Discuss.

Soundcloud Rap popularized not finishing your music and mixing it in 12 minutes and calling it "punk" or "new gen", so yeah, I guess X helped pioneer that

He's like the Kanye of s*** music

  • Aug 16, 2023

No, XXXTentacion did not invent short songs

The commercial stuff is too manufactured and fake

A lot of people like the rawness/amateur-ness of X’s music

    It’s appealing

I’m ngl since I think most people on this site are indifferent towards him, I’ll be real and say he always came off a little bit like a narcissist himself or a cult leader. He had devoted ass fans and positioned himself like he was their savior

On some level he was probably just ignorant but that s*** was still like some high key control issues ass s***

He's a total narcissist lmao. He pivoted into that "softboy" indie rock emo rap s*** after he was under fire for abusing his ex. He painted himself as a hurting soul to deflect from being a damn psychopath and it worked until he got clipped

Prior to that softboy s*** dude was just a maniac who occasionally rapped about being depressed but most of the time was making damn near horrorcore and flex raps

Other than that noisy trap stuff he was making early on he was always extremely derivative and undercooked and even the noisy trap stuff was hit or miss. Bro has like one album's worth of solid songs

Only truly exceptional work to come out of the Soundcloud scene is Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, and that first Ski Mask tape

It's a reason why three of the artists from that era are still relevant despite that era ending less than three years ago and starting like 6-7 years ago lmao. Carti/Uzi/Trippie the only ones who survived and Yachty pivoted into a different genre and as a producer. Everyone else fell off a cliff
