Only truly exceptional work to come out of the Soundcloud scene is Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, and that first Ski Mask tape

It's a reason why three of the artists from that era are still relevant despite that era ending less than three years ago and starting like 6-7 years ago lmao. Carti/Uzi/Trippie the only ones who survived and Yachty pivoted into a different genre and as a producer. Everyone else fell off a cliff

I wanna say peep was pretty good. Also juice had some hits imo. 6 dogs also undeniably one of the best to do it from that scene

I remember chxpo and slaylonie being a thing speaking of sc rap and p***. Slaylonie got an Asian nigga these days I think

    Chxpo was fire

Underground soundcloud s*** was tight at times because a lot of that stuff came from the wider camp of SpaceGhostPurrp and the Drain Gang guys who are legit dope, but I don't really associate that with "Soundcloud Rap", just like Cloud Rap/Dark Trap stuff in general

I don't consider Peep or Juice WRLD SC rap tbh. It's more like emo rap. Those waves were simultaneous.

SC Rap is like Lil Pump, Lil Skies, Lil Yachty, Lil Xan, etc. That cheeseball goofy colorful pop trap stuff. But Peep and Juice were cool

    Never bumped 6 Dogs

    lil pump short songs

Soundcloud Rap, to me, was that specific style of hip hop that had short, undercooked beats with really noisy, uncompressed bass, and the most remedial, repetitive flows possible, really not conveying much of any emotion or even topic besides like anger and occasionally horniness lol. Most of the time the music was just about being high or empty flexes about spending money or owning guns

I couldn’t help but always think if Juice, X and Peep had lived, would the music landscape today look completely different? That s*** really drove the final nail into the coffin of emo rap which I can’t help but think could have still been a thriving genre with the survival of these artists. Really makes you think.

Peep was a genuine visionary and Juice had a lot of talent. I think they could've really grown into seriously dope artists. We'll never know though

That self titled tape from 2017 legit so fire to me. Like classic track after classic track. I don’t like replaying a lot of s*** from that era other than peep and juice like I said but this s*** is actually amazingly good and I wasn’t even a fan when it came out

Yep, Peep genuinely has a number of seriously exceptional, groundbreaking tapes. His work with Tracy and JGRXXN was fire too

I feel he may have sampled linkin park at some point in one of those projects but it feels like the closest thing to classic lp that came out in the 2010s. Emo angst with those instrumentals and beautiful melodies. Lyrics were simplistic but same could be said for lp. It was part of the beauty. Since I grew up on lp and stuff like three days grace and the 2000s amv angry rock song sound, I’m not overtly against really cheesy simplistic emo lyrics and feel they have their own weird charm or appeal.

I’m ngl since I think most people on this site are indifferent towards him, I’ll be real and say he always came off a little bit like a narcissist himself or a cult leader. He had devoted ass fans and positioned himself like he was their savior

On some level he was probably just ignorant but that s*** was still like some high key control issues ass s***

for sure he was a narcissist, he even admits it on Floor 555

guy was a great musician but pretty much an awful person for the majority of his brief lifespan

wish he had more time to change and hopefully become a better person, I feel like he was slowly going on that path

but the real question is how much of that s*** was just PR and image rehabilitation after he brutalized Geneva and spent his teenage years on violent rampages? I think a lot of that charity and positive message stuff outside of his mental health outreach was done to help gain fans and distract from his cases, so he could get some support after he inevitably got locked up

I don’t think x music is technically that good and peep probably had more good projects. Also I hate x’s narcissistic personality

But I gotta be honest, there is a certain feeling he captured with some of these vibes and half songs that is really hard to pin down, and still feels kind of innovative and alive and hard to describe or pin down compared to some Lil Peep or Juice which is a lot easier to get your head around

Yeah there’s no doubt that all of that “I’m a good guy now” was just an extension of the narcissism cult leader behavior he showed, and it’s scary how well it worked. Some bad people really have that skill of basically gaslighting, he was damn near gaslighting a whole country of kids lol

In a different way for a different demographic I see a lot of this type of behavior/mass manipulation in Joe Budden

dude was always pretty bad at making stuff outside a handful of songs if we’re keeping it a dime

I am glad the era of deifying X is over and we can talk about the actual art. And actually, as a rapper, this nigga was so wishy washy. Flows were all over the place with the most basic ass bars ever.
