Zack Snyder : Heavy handed visual references but weak character and story
David Fincher: psychological stories featuring extreme sex, violence and seamless editing with digital effects.
Hayao Miyazaki: Nature stories featuring children usually young girls finding themselves.
good post but cant fully agree about the snyder part. I find his visual storytelling very on the nose and surface level. Just look at this : i.redd.it/rpcvwmau6jo21.jpg
Only my opinion obviously but he was behind some of the best blockbusters of all time (Armageddon, Transformers OG, The Rock). Also directed Pain & Gain which I thought was a great film.
Don't get me wrong, he directed some garbage but he's been meme-d to death about explosions and s*** so the films don't get appreciated as much as they should be is all
they aren't special films lmao they're cool for a casual blockbuster but nothing that makes his style standout and praise him. Versus a Tarentino, Kubrick, scorsese film is them written all over it.

I'm not complimenting him at all lol I'm saying it like he reaches deep to make those references.
That scene being an example I'll put heavy handed instead tho cause it fits what I mean

Bay is underrated as hell these days. Dude knows how direct a action scene and has a style of his own. The big problem is, that the story usually sucks ass lol.
The amount of work he puts into his set pieces, his use of mixing practical stunts and with digital effects overall he's not great all around but I think people understate his work on blockbusters
okay I don't think you realize how much he does as a director lmfaooo all the things you named are not things he does. You can't even really compare one of his films to someone like Kubrick who was so involved in every part of the process

However people feel about his style he does have one otherwise people wouldn't single him out and gives his style so many nicknames from "Bayformers" to "Bayhem"
He is one of the most parodied and we'll known Blockbuster filmmakers because of his style whether it's good is opinion tho.
But to say he has no style is just a lie his style is the thing people love and hate about him.

I see your point but it isn't fair to compare his classics to theirs, as it's like comparing a rock album to a rap album. He has his spot in the industry: massive action set pieces, technically-sound editing and audio, and a good story with likeable characters

Reading your comments ITT it seems you have an issue with Bay which is fine and don't find his work to have value.
But I'm not really tryna debate that and I apologize for even opening up the discussion.
Yea, say what u want about Bay, but the man has his own style. He used to be a succesful commercial director and i think you can see it in his movies. There are always car scenes that look straight out of a ford commercial lol. Other stuff he always does: "The spinning hero shot" (not sure how to call but just google bay shot ", over the top teal and orange color grading, Explosions...etc.

His obsession with those colors deadass set the tone for movie posters in the 2010s and the fact every movie post T3 had a giant light beam in the final act

Interesting, I feel like the stories told in his films are no different than others, he just doesn't seem to put the same focus on the plot as much as some. However, I could totally see why this is turn off for people

yea ur right, i think what i meant was the way he tells the stories and the script itself. His heros can be pretty unlikeable in my opinion which can be distracting, the same goes for his fetishization of the millitary.

Great points, he seems to fetishize a lot of things lmao. The military, cars, and attractive females

Bad Boys 1 + 2 are so f***ing good. Even the third was fire

I'm satisfied with the whole trilogy. First one a classic tho

Egregious Product placement & some american iconography

I don't have an issue with him, my B if I came off standoffish. I'm open to discussion.
I think my issue that I have with this topic in particular is that he's just a generic blockbuster action director. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But when we're talking about great or even underrated, I don't feel like he's underrated. I think the criticism he receives is appropriate just as some of the praise he gets.
I didn't mean to come off like a d*** head my b.
