I really wanna do a public interview in a setting with people who take visual arts really serious and ask them about NFT’s.

You need one thats for it & one thats against it that also have some legs in the field, & both them at the same time

NFTs right now seem like scams cuz they just pictures. NFTs will make sense when metaverses become more popular. In there's NFTs will be clothes, avatars, items.

What is the most effective argument against broke artists selling their s*** as NFT's because they know their chance of selling is higher than if they just sold their work traditionally? Like outside of NFT's being fundamentally stupid and a lot of the rich people stuff/shit art that NFT's are and should be defined by, is there a compelling argument for small artists (who make great capital-A Art) that doesn't involve morality/environment/bad optics rebuttals

Because I think a distinction between being a participant and being a critic would allow for that space to become more politicized/less miracle spiritual amongst the most vulnerable groups that are getting into it. When I'm on twitter and read through profiles I see so many people who read like they're fomo-ing and trying to make rent more than I read people who espouse libertarian tech-bro identities/ideologies

I don't think you can have effective argument without talking about the morality, politics, environmental impact and optics of NFT's since those things are such a core part of the whole space. I think to ignore those things would be detrimental to whatever argument someone could come up with. But tbh I don't really engage in this space all that much. Most of what I know is just from the things I've seen/read in passing. Someone who's more knowledgeable might be able to come up with an argument that fits those parameters.

I don't think small artists who decide to sell NFT's are bad, I just think they've been fooled into a get rich quick scheme. Like you said, it's fomo and people who need money quickly. So I agree that they aren't the libertarian tech bros that most people think of when they think of people who sell NFT's.

But I would disagree that a distinction between participant and critic would lead to the market being viewed more realistically from the perspective of a small artist because the market is entirely controlled by libertarian tech bros who have more money and influence than any small artist or group of artists could have. For every small artist who breaks free and sees NFT's for what what they are, another 1000 were just fooled into thinking they can become the next Bill Gates. It just feels like a losing battle.

Gotta disagree. Sure there are some artists who will get lucky and make money but the NFT market is extremely easy to manipulate if you have the funds to do so. A ton of those posts you see where s*** sells for millions of dollars is just straight up lies as the funds get immediately transferred back to original owner.

    https://twitter.com/coffeebreak_YT/status/1453897860420931584

There's also cases a s*** ton of examples of people buying and selling their own NFT's to themselves (using multiple accounts) to artificially increase the price until some sucker comes along and buys it a hugely inflated price.

Plus there's a huge problem with theft. If you spend any time on the artist side of twitter you'll constantly see posts of people having their artwork stolen and made into NFT's.

The "little man" very rarely makes significant money in this space by just turning their artwork into NFT's.

its rly funny bc the nft market works just like that lol

its not rlly stocks its just bigger idiot philosophy. the idea is that someone else out there is gonna be a bigger idiot than u and pay even more for it than what u bought it for.

its not like buying stock or forex where u purchase something and it holds that value, goes up or down, and u take a concrete loss or gain. a purchased nft has absolutely zero value unless someone else is willing to buy it lol. Massive bubble just waiting to burst imo.

even regular crypto (which is crazy volatile) is wayyy more stable. NFTs are only really good for the ppl who sell them and the rich ppl who use them as tax write offs.

  • Dec 15, 2021

people compare it to collecting art but thats not even rlly accurate

a painting won't become obsolete in 4-5 years lol.

but how much will that apply when multiple meta platforms come and go?
