This rhetoric can go both ways. Its as easy as its hard because of the ubiquity. So while I agree, I also disagree.
Are you not conflating popular with great?
Every thing great by semantics has to be popular but not every popular ha to be popular.
To use brother @Bmezy’s example, We Are Young was incredibly popular but as a song is wasn’t (in my eyes anyways) a great song.

Whilst this is clearly in jest it was the first time I think I ever listened to her and her shrillness didn’t grate.

Are their vocal mixes as elaborate and layered as Bey’s arrangements? I know Chris’s vocal mixes are on a similar level on certain songs (his stacking ability and his ear for lush harmonic structures in the background and his work ethic is also incredible (imo)
TBH, if a producer praised him in this manner then I say he deserves to be commended. Someone mentioned before there’s a difference when you’re doing freestyled adlibs and 2 take 16 bars and showcasing vocal musicianship; creating complex vocal stems and compositions that requires extreme dexterity, precision and a lot of patience. Brandy is another that has crazy complex arrangements..
