Perception is inherent to clothing and is something that is traditionally defined by your community and society (though this isn't nearly the case anymore in a globalized world, it still exists in some form). What you wear is a two-way street in terms of interaction between you and the people around you.

But in specifically the artistic part of it, many express themselves by the clothes they wear. And this form is not necessarily seeking validation. In an aesthetic sense, it really is where your opinion shines and you can point at something and say "I like that." What we determine of what's an individual thinking for themselves and what their thoughts is influenced by their environment is hard to pinpoint, but that "image" they're trying to project on others is still their image.

The Impressionists didn't throw away their paintings because society didn't like them, and they didn't paint what they did primarily to impress other Impressionists-- they were a likeminded community that enjoyed the aesthetic of what they were creating, even if they were influenced by that community.
