I don’t know if I have the perfect words to describe it, but I feel like the way Hip Hop music is judged is just so different than other genres of music (within the community). I’m an indie rock fan as well and have some friends who are into metal and hardcore music, and I rarely hear these genres critiqued like rap is. There seems to be a deeper understanding that the music is subjective, but rap fans tend to put an objective expectation on rappers.
In other genres I also don’t see this need for a “consensus opinion” that results in someone having bad taste if they like/don’t like something that’s outside of it. I know pop music has the stan wars, but even then, that’s a lil different and they give more power to objective things like sales and vocal range, blah blah blah.
Idk, what y’all think?
I think your anecdotal evidence is untrue.
Metal fans are absolutely critical of bands

They are significantly harsher with metal
Niggas always hating. Its that simple. Especially when it comes to basketball and rap. They love to build you up just to tear you down

Oh I will 100% confirm this is all reflective of the circle that I attract, but while I’ve seen my metal friends talk about what they don’t like about another band, there tends to be a lot more room to like albums and artists that others don’t and it not affect how they see someone’s taste or knowledge of the genre.
shoutout to anyone who looks for the good in things instead of just writing it off on contact
Speaking as someone whose listened to metal since a very early age, metalheads can be very elitist and judgmental about what people listen to, and the culture was incredibly toxic in the 80's and 90's when it was at its peak popularity.
All genres have their asshats. It depends who you hang around with. It only seems more outward with hip-hop because it's the most popular genre in the US as of right now.

Lol me mentioning metal seems to be the biggest hang up in this thread so I will concede that it sounds like I just found really cool metal friends. Do you still think the same of other genres tho?

It's the same with the other genres in my experience. Like I said, hip-hop is a relatively young genre that's in the forefront. Meaning there'll be a lot of people with dissenting opinions across demographics. It's only natural.
Which has happened before with other genres like rock, metal, etc. The difference is that those genres have passed that mega-popular phase and entered the more "gatekeeping/judge-y" part as their core population has aged, taking a more lowkey (but still pretty harsh) approach to criticism.
Nowadays it feels like this forum just hates everything it comes out
mfs just reaching to be different

I mean not really even when I posted my music I ain’t really get any negative responses, I think it’s just the same group of people being really loud
I disagree with the 'consensus opinion' take
I feel like with it being such a diverse genre, especially at this current moment in time, that can't really exist?
outside of annoying backpack fans who thankfully don't exist in large numbers anymore

it's different when it's responses to a user's own work
