kendrick's versatility is vastly overstated, like nothing on big steppers would feel completely out of place on any of his previous projects

Eh...it depends on the artists. Some people are specialists while others are innovators. Both groups can make great music.

Rick Ross, Pusha T, Future, and Too Short have a lane but they made a lot of great music in that lane.

Kendrick, Kanye, Outkast, Tyler, and Mac Miller switch it up a lot and it works.

But, sometimes, it can hurt artists to switch things up if they're not good at innovating.

Eminem tried to switch things up on Revival and look at how that went. Hell, Kanye tried to switch things up with JIK and while JIK is overhated, it's still Ye's worst album to date.

Basically, it depends on the artist and the style they're trying to switch to.

Imagine thinking that MMTBS falls in line with DAMN.

Or that either album falls in line with GKMC and S80.

I mean it kinda does? I wouldn’t include section 80 in the chronology. But this album feels and sounds the same as any other project more or less

YouTube documentary style vids by nerds who didn't start listening to music until halfway though their sophomore year in high school are trying to ruin rap and music as a whole but I won't let it happen

    WESLEY THE GREAT

KTT2 is obsessed with Kendrick at this point.

I remember when J Cole was the punching bag on here.

Never thought I'd see the day when Kendrick would take Coles spot.

I mean I don't like derivatives of songs/movies everyone already likes but I'm always against Tyler/Kanye/Kendrick d***riding so not watching this (who asked am I right)

HARD disagree. certain niggas will never succeed until they find their niche. I agree that it helps to be versatile when you're making music but to say every artist should try to be Tyler or Kanye is gonna lead a lot of people to failure instead of drawing up their own plans for success

On balance, I think artists taking risks that lead to great music is worth suffering through the occasional weedplate, and honestly, I think an artist who never does this will never ascend to legend tier
