I think this is a fair take too. Idk if SHE is inauthentic but I think the label push def made her come off as inauthentic
Whenever most artists get a huge push it comes across inorganic but its just marketing at the end of the day.
But I think the fast push though only hurts in the long run because you cant build genuine fans of you. Look at a lot of the late 2010s and early 2020s acts.
Yea that's my video in OP
but when I post them on here I try to pose a different question to KTT because
1) I don't want my threads to be straight self promo I prefer to try and create actual convos on here so I'm leaving a positive impact
2) you guys are on a higher level of music discourse than the average youtube viewer imo so the questions can be a bit more fun
You’re right man ktt is underrated.
so if the music is good enough you push through?
or does that only really apply if the artist is perpetuating something negative. Like for Lizzo it was kinda different tbh
Generally speaking. It’s case by case. I was watching a video where Woody was talking about Wayne and Plies earlier so it’s funny you brought this up but I just feel like it’s in the execution I guess. Wayne I can look past it more than Plies.
Yeah for Lizzo I don’t care although I don’t listen to her and only know surface level information about her.
These entertainers and that’s it. Ktt dorks love to live vicariously through their favorite artist tho
the thing with lizzo that gets me is people claim she was only liked because she was plus sized and body positivity was big back then but it feels so dismissive to her actual talent. y'all know she was cosigned by Prince right? she's a multi-instrumentalist and a talented singer as well. yes, the music was corny and generic at times but we don't have to discredit her in the process of trying to make the points we want to make.

ye her music was actually enjoyable until a certain point
cosign is silly though kanye cosigned dave blunts who gaf
Is there anything you can pick apart to figure out why one annoys you and the other doesn't? Or is it just a je nais sais quois thing or however tf you spell it
Rick Ross is close enough to a cartoon character. The guys from NWA have more to explain than he does. Tupac has more to explain than he does. He's black Action Bronson.
Lizzo is a cry bully whose 15 minutes ended ~8 years ago.
Let us not speak on Drake. Enough has been said already about Drake.
i was going to use the example of future so I'm glad you did. In his case I know he did drink codeine in the past and is likely around people that do so I'm okay with it. It is within his own lifestyle.
It's also debatable at that time whether he actually had stopped drinking codeine or if that was simply in response to the question
there's no way her controversy had this much of an impact though
it did. Lizzo carries herself as oblivious to the details of the case and as a victim which turned many of her fans away
it was a “shocking” situation for a such a clean artist and she hasn’t responded well at all to the fallout, just aloof and she even terribly celebrated them dropping the least of the nasty accusations like she was being lied on lol

I don't think it was the ONLY thing but I think it could be seen as the reason why Atlantic didn't want to invest money in her newer projects -> she stops reaching her fans many of whom I'd imagine are on the older side and not necessarily #TappedIn combing spotify for new releases (anecdotally all my aunts love lizzo lol) -> she never built a real diehard fanbase around her SOUND it was mostly around her IMAGE and when labels stop wanting to invest in her, she stops reaching them

Prince mostly had atrocious opinions
And playing instruments doesn’t make you a good artist

yeah makes sense
to me it was partly a kind of Chance the rapper situation where people just got bored of that type of music (+ combined with terrible music). the pandemic was a massive shift
Bob Dylan is the best example of why you shouldn't

It 100% is that too. My argument is that artists who have survived controversies that are worse on paper than hers (Carti, you could argue Kanye etc) have one big thing going for them that she didn't:
their fans are fans of them for their SOUND, not just their image
I think when you really love an artist's SOUND, some fans can use cognitive dissonance to ignore whatever is going on in that artist's life, the old separate the art from the artist argument
When you're really just a vessel for more popular generic sounds like Lizzo was, which let's be real most of her songs could have been by another artist somewhere along the lines of Chappell Roan, Doja Cat, Sabrina Carpenter, whoever, then your fans and the label aren't gonna stick by you through rough times
I'm thinking we go ahead and make this whole thread about Drake?
New video idea
How old is too old to be a Stan? Swift and Drake in the thumbnail.

we comparing a kanye cosign to a prince cosign okay
Just don't annoy me. Rule number one. Lizzo? Highly annoying. Rick Ross? Not annoying. Drake? Highly annoying.
Rick Ross “not annoying”

I have thought about a larger convo there about adulthood and fandom but could be worth it
To a point
fans don’t truly want authenticity
He only annoys Papi's Angles
