Do you tend to gravitate towards watching more generally acclaimed movies, or do you take a more “call it as you see it” approach to what you select?
Do you also ever, out of curiosity, watch movies that were panned, or received less warmly?
Absolutely not. I watch new releases and let other people decide all the time. Personal consumption I try to be eclectic as well. Exploring movies shot by a particular cinematographer at present. Pretty wide variety there.
have you ever met a "film critic" irl or attempted to talk to one on twitter? these people have brains that rattle around like a sack of marbles.
to answer your first question, no. if I had done that I'd have missed out on a lot of great films and would have watched a lot of mid in the process.
No but I don’t seek out dog s*** for entertainment either
no, i just watch what i enjoy or would find interesting tbh, i think that's what everyone should do
Yeah I respect the professionals POV when it comes to anything food films and games if the ratings are low because of the quality and not some bs then I probably won’t watch it. But I might watch that new bad boys they say it’s better than the last one
If it catches my personal interest I’ll check it out, good ratings could help make me interested but if the premise or trailer doesn’t grab me then I’m probably gonna miss it.

I found myself doing that for a minute and realized how f***ing dumb it is.
Yes, I only watch avant garde cinema. Only if the critics like it!
Nah, man that's stupid. It's good to use it as a perspective but consume the media you want.
Sometimes I like to watch a 90's Arnold cheesy action flick

I feel the exact opposite lol. I tend to care about a general critical reception because otherwise I feel like I’m just groping around in the dark. You have to make your purchase based on something and I’d rather go by critics than trailers, which are often manipulative, and couldn’t possibly tell you the whole story. Critical reception has pointed me in the direction of a lot of gems that I otherwise would have missed out on.
I don’t need 100% rotten tomatoes or anything, but I’m usually looking for it to at least have its defenders. On rare occasions I’ll make an exception if I really like the director, too.
letterboxd is better if you need general opinions because its (mostly) normal people and not exclusively dudes who look like this
and it wouldn't be so bad but most of these dudes don't know jack about film as an art.
just find people with similar taste and share your honest thoughts on a movie, it aint hard to figure out what the good s*** is depending on what you value in a movie.

I need to be more like this because I miss out on a lot of films.
Playing the Cinematrix game on Vulture.com made me aware of how many movies from the 90s, starring fairly well known actors, I didn’t even know existed.
No but I do check scores beforehand, like if it’s really bad I’m not wastin 2 hours on it
I've always found, at least in my experience, I don't really enjoy the movies that sweep the Oscars. It feels like the replay value or whatever is not there, and then, it feels like those " This won 14 Oscars" movies never get remembered
Ngl I do check rotten tomatoes when looking for a movie to watch but I’m not strict about it
If it has a high critic score but low audience score I’ll watch
If it has a low critic score but high audience score I’ll watch
If it’s in the middle for both (60s-70s) I’ll watch
If it’s low for both it’ll have to be a director/cast I like or the trailers interest me
If it catches my personal interest I’ll check it out, good ratings could help make me interested but if the premise or trailer doesn’t grab me then I’m probably gonna miss it.

Hell nah
I watch movies I’m interested or watch movies that someone who I think has good taste recommends to me
Too many times, I leave disappointed in watching these “real cinema” ass movies that are good movies that I only wanna watch once and never again
I watch what I like and that’s what everyone should do too
