I’m not talking about the legal sense of it, I’m talking about the principle.

The idea of free speech is a double edged sword, you allow people to say what they want but that opens the door for racism, bigotry and misinformation.

But on the flip side if you try to suppress those people spreading it you get accused of censorship and there’s something you don’t want us to know.

Personally I can’t honestly say I support it.

Thread was inspired by this guy and others getting banned of Youtube/twitter.

I think one of the main problems is that some voices are louder than others. And people with money can make their voice louder to suit their agenda

  • Corporations have too much power. not going to be mad if nazis are kicked off of twitter though

  • I support free speech. Unfortunately the majority of people have a limited supply of brain cells and never research any topic on their own so they’re easily consumed by the ramblings of other people working with 3 brain cells.

It is what it is tho. Most people are dumb. Censoring them isn’t gonna change that, just make them angry.

Of course i support free speech, you argued free speech could lead to fascism but it's the opposite, the lack of it leads to totalitarism which causes censorship and forces one way of thought into people

Yeah basically - where do you draw the line if you dont want free speech. Like what can and cant you say? I hate to be that person that says free speech is the lesser of two evils but i think its true in this contemporary scenario of 7 billion people

  • Free speech is great when people actually know what they're talking about and hold no bias. If they are bias and they do not know what they're talking about and decide to speak freely then they should be prepared for the response. Whether verbal or physical.

Basically like when people talk about stuff like the bell curve and the link between race and IQ and genetic differences. A coded way of being racist without being blatantly racist.

Remember that scene in Django Unchained where Calvin Candy (Leo's character) pulls out the skull? That's pretty much what it is. Of course at this point it's completely dismissed as pseudoscience by just about everyone so whoever believes it probably suffers from having a single braloserl, but it was legitimately discussed in scientific context back in the 1800s.
