  • i f***ing hate most internet reddit speech warriors but i do support free speech even for being a f***ing idiot. humans are irrational no matter what and i do not believe the alternative of trying to socially engineer information regardless of its truth or reliability will have a great outcome. in fact i believe unified social media platforms like twitter are inherently a problem because they passively socially engineer outcomes and ideas through trends, algorithms, and other such things.
however i will say that free speech != forced association. if you think someone is a f***ing idiot, then i fully support your own choice to tell them to f*** off. my issue comes with monolithic corporations who hold pseudo-governmental positions where speech is no longer simply platform participation but full-on political gesturing, especially because corporations do not hold any of these ideas to heart and do so at their own will because of a number of factors including; corruption, PR, investor relations, opportunism.
the free speech debate would be a non-issue if the internet was not consolidated into monolithic entities' control. free speech is often less about "speech" and more about "speech" as a platform for PR & Monetization; this is, of course, not wanting to be banned by a payment processor, or not wanting to be banned by a monetization algorithm. So while I don't think you should be forced to give service to someone esp. if their speech says one thing or another, it is a different issue when what we are talking about should be classified as a utility to begin with - i.e. if someone says something stupid, they can't just have their utilities (electricity, phone) revoked. but they can have their ability to bank and make money (payment processing because of visa/mastercard being monopolies) revoked. in a modern age, banking and credit cards are legitimately utilities, and are not just random corporations. If Twitter or FB wants to ban people, that's one thing, but often this trickles down to collusion of all platforms to collectively kick someone off the internet which is a far bigger issue

The education system needs to revamped. We wouldn’t have as many people following these stupid ass theories.
Don’t restrict free speech but keep social media fact checked

    Yes and no

I feel like everyone has the right to speak without being censored

But at the same time words can be dangerous and lead to disgusting crimes, especially when used by the loudest and most ignorant of our society

So I think it's a bit more complicated than saying "I'm for it" or "I'm against it"

    "scientific racism"

I don't even want to know what that is.

    very straightforward

it's using "science" to justify racism, i.e. white people are genetically superior to other races

Yes but imo the true double edge sword is that in America we have free speech but today so many people words mean nothing. We have trolls, a bunch of virtue signaling, half assed “journalists”, etc. that’ll say some pretty heavy s*** with little to no actions behind it from either side. There’s countries where people speak out against their government and get locked up or beat which is f***ed up but you know they meant it and they’re someone to stand with and when your words and the actions to follows them can equal life or death those words will hit for a lot more people.

I support free speech though for sure but “with great power comes great responsibility” and all that bullshit.

the legal sense is the whole point lol

getting banned from youtube/twitter doesn't have anything to do with free speech

  • Jul 8, 2020

    yep

Free speech doesn't mean free from repercussions.

    I support it.

This. Say what you want but also be ready to face up the consequences when it calls for it.

I’m not talking about the legal sense of it, I’m talking about the principle.

The idea of free speech is a double edged sword, you allow people to say what they want but that opens the door for racism, bigotry and misinformation.

But on the flip side if you try to suppress those people spreading it you get accused of censorship and there’s something you don’t want us to know.

Personally I can’t honestly say I support it.

Thread was inspired by this guy and others getting banned of Youtube/twitter.

And the Plandemic lady who has TENS OF THOUSANDS believing conspiracy’s about COVID

I would say the most important point is that the concept of freedom of speech / freedom of expression should only ever be seen in its proper context - when enforced or restricted by a government.

People getting kicked off social media sites is not really a question of free speech (unless a government has forced it to happen).

The kinds of people who get kicked off these things invoke the concept of free speech specifically to muddy the waters and make it seem like there’s a liberal conspiracy against them or whatever

  • Jul 8, 2020

No , in all honesty not everybody needs a platform to speak

  • Jul 8, 2020

you still spoke freely even if you get folded right after

Yes, because the opposite is speech controlled by the government. Banning and arresting neo-Nazis and other racist agitators sounds great, until you realize that same power can be used against you when the pendulum inevitably swings the other way.
