it's either coming off as a gatekeeping elitist or giving the f***withthises of the world a voice. tough choice tbh

I think it does, someone who’s introduction to rap was Eternal Atake shouldn’t be able to start slandering Rakim and Kool G. Of course they have freedom of speech so they can say whatever they’d like but it just dosent sit right with me

This exactly. I'll respect their opinion as long as they recognize that it doesn't hold much weight and can't be asserted over the opinions of others with more experience and knowledge in the genre. They need to realize they still have a lot to learn and be willing to do so. There's no excuse with the resources we have now

For example, last year this girl was telling me J Cole's best project is 2014 FHD and she was adamant that I was wrong for saying FNL was his peak. She didn't even listen to FNL How are you gonna insist that you're right and I'm wrong when I've been a fan of the artist for longer and actually made the effort to listen to all of his work This could be applied to the genre as a whole, a lot of these people who hopped on to hip-hop over the last few years due to its popularity are far too comfortable voicing their opinion as fact when they haven't made the effort to educate themselves.

    F*** gatekeeping

This, but it’s easy to dismiss opinions if people are openly ignorant to the legends.

You don’t have to like 90’s or 80’s rap if you don’t like it, but you gotta respect it or at least try it out. You’re not impressing anyone if you can’t name a single Pac or Biggie song (cough cough Uzi).

That’s big facts. There’s plenty of people on this site and irl who don’t know their place when talking about certain subjects because they think anything 15+ years or older is s***. Now if somebody is open minded and willing to try out the music, I’d definitely be part of the conversation and recommend them some stuff yfm.

I just can’t stand willful ignorance

I truthfully think it’s a reaction to the other side saying that new s*** is trash. Like it’s so easy to be one end or the other.

Niggas wanna listen to old s*** because it’s timeless and niggas wanna listen to new s*** cause it’s new and trendy (tbh it’s trendy either way imo).

Honestly, I think the more positive experiences you have with s*** the more open minded you’ll be. I can name countless rappers I didn’t f*** with but people positively explained why they like them and I reconsidered my stance and gave them another shot and actually enjoyed it.

That small little difference can do a lot for people imo

I feel like if you genuinely write of an entire era you’re just lying or shallow in terms of your taste. Like deadass, if you don’t like a single new rap song or old rap song you haven’t put enough effort into finding stuff

there’s a certain dialogue that needs to be started on here one day and it ties directly to what this thread is about...

Some of this is factual though, that guy on DEHH usually has the opinions I agree with most and he voices it well. That definitely was Drake's last good album And those Kendrick snubs were garbage

However if they ain't do their due diligence listening to older albums or artist they shouldn't be making these bold statements

Example: "Nas discography is so trash"

Those who claim “all Illmatic songs sound the same” disgust me

  • Feb 4, 2021

It really depends on what type of opinions they have. I know not everyone grows up with rap music or appreciates it right away but if you're disrespecting legends and classics without ever really giving it a chance then I can't really respect your opinion.

Yeah except if you’re gonna come into a thread on the examples in OP you should educate yourself

Yea this is a example of the negatives. But I’ve seen niggas start getting into hip hop heavy in like 2018 and knowing they s*** cause they also research the greats and history aswell while having a refreshing perspective. Very rare

It’s important to always expand your musical horizons. I grew up on no music so I’ve had to dig to find stuff. I also won’t admit to know everything about everything either but probably more than that super vocal minority that doesn’t know who like jay z is besides Beyoncé husband

do you have the same tastes you had when you first started listening to a genre of music? untrained ears tend to be impressed by trash and then realize it was trash when they find out about better but less accessible music along the way

i cant take new rap fans seriously when they talk about who's best and who's the greatest when they dont even know about most legendary rappers discographies

I would prob be more sceptical of their views but honestly you can tell p quickly if somebody has submerged themselves in the culture/music even over a short period or if they're just bsing

Lotta people who listen to s*** for years have garbo opinions too

  • Feb 4, 2021

It really depends more on what they're saying rather on how much time they listened to it

    I don't really care if you're a post-2016 rap fan or a 2000s rap fan

  • Feb 4, 2021

    No I dont

I know someone like that who just got into hiphop but used to listen to some commercial s*** on TV way back and he keeps saying Eminem Show is the best album ever

He also says Lil Baby and Gunna are the best rappers alive

  • Feb 4, 2021

Ppl like that are the reason why the genre has gone to s***

I respect everyone's opinion regardless of how much music they've listened to. I can also disagree with them

  • Feb 4, 2021

Gatekeeping is the thing i hate the most, elitists thinking their opinion is the only valid one as if we didnt all go through that starting phase

  • Feb 4, 2021

I'll always discredit the opinion of someone who says stuff like "I dont even like rap much but this new Eminem albums hitting"
