all rap that isn't made with the intention of party music is conscious because it has something to talk about (perspective). u could even argue that the party music is conscious but im not gonna make that argument. either way, i only bring that up because i think the main problem isn't rap being "deep" or not (because most rap to me is inherently conscious). i think the problem is that its mostly low effort so far this decade. i think even the stereotypical idea people have of conscious music is very low effort as of late.

The ultimate thing people should take away from this is to put effort into rap. Whether it’s production or rapping itself

conscious rap is a misnom to what people are discussing here. conscious should refer explicitly to the wave black star, common, and the roots belong to. this is to make sure we dont fall in the trap of conscious-unconscious which only confuses us further. TI was 'conscious' but thats not what we're talking about here

    No because they’re excellent lol

You think all boom bap is Tribe level?

Sounding alike is just a sequitur for genre music

pac was top of the charts while also irl shooting at cops and reading and talking about stalin books, theres not a single way they would allow this to continue

Back to this, I believe it but unfortunately do not think Hip hop’s evolution can be blamed on anyone but us

The problem (and i peed your “rappers tapped in their own lane”) is this type of production has been worn out tbh.

It got nothing to do with the content but like to this day imo this the best nba youngboy and not just cause the content but bro actually took a step out.

Me and yns (i think i forget the thread) was talking bout it in a thread but yb one of the rappers that imo could KILL if he worked on some blues/country type production.

And I say this as the same “we wAnT bEtTeR PrOdUcTiOn FrOm cOnSCiOuS rApPeRs” drivel that is RAMPANT on here somehow never transfers to the #otherside for reasons I don’t understand nigga s\*\*\* nigga s\*\*\* nigga nigga nigga s\*\*\* “sorry to bother you” type beat

only slightly more dismissive than the s*** I see when niggas wanna down thug or future, both could get whacked

there’s a handful of people (including me) who “down Thug & Future” max

y’all usually too busy soullessly d***riding anything they put out, a couple of naysayers is okay

not if you dont go on twitter

nah that style of reductive hot take one liners has permeated all of music discourse, s*** is a virus

lot of cross pollination in between Twitter, forums, Reddit etc.

why are people not able to appreciate the different aspects of rap.

you can appreciate sexxy red and noname

a portion of it is how people use music to signify their identity lol

it’s “cooler” to listen to Sexxy Red than it is Noname, it’s the same s*** with “mysterious music” and other forms of alternative/experimental music getting tossed out as “scaring the hoes music”

all has to deal with how other people think of it and perceive it
