Y’all bringing up Youngboy & Sauce Walka just tells me you don’t get the whole picture of what niggas are talking about. 50 was a street rapper to his core and his music had soul to it. Mobb Deep music had soul to it. Dipset had soul to it. That same soul is what Kendrick has. It’s more than what you’re talking about, it’s HOW you talk about it.
Those niggas mentioned do not have soul to their music man.
Woah woah woah, YB has no soul in his music???
Not a crazy take but the sentiment is a lil off
bro said 50 cent
sunny days wouldn't be special if it wasn't for rain.
Joy wouldn't feel so good if it wasn't for pain.
Death gotta be easy, 'cause life is hard
stop while you behind homie
gotta be a requirement you had to be born before 2003 to participate in certain discussions lol.
I can’t imagine supporting the “let ppl have fun 🥺” s*** knowing where this country is headed for the next decade.
s***s not a game anymore, never was but now i feel nauseous every time i see ppl let this anti-intellectual s*** rock.
”that’s why another god damn dance track gotta hurt”
I think there should be a space for both to exist.
Calling conscious music “Harriet Tubman rap” is definitely disgusting and racist, but I don’t think the alternative to that is that there shouldn’t be any fun, lighthearted music in rap either.
Some people look for escapism in their art when reality gets nasty, and some people look for art that directly reflects the things that are happening in our world.
I don’t see a reason why both can’t exist simultaneously without one group trying to tear down the other

The problem is one has clearly been given priority in the mainstream for the past 20+ years
man this wouldn't need to be a convo if folks stepped it up
I can’t believe I agree with Troy Ave Stan, lol.
I think sometimes some people do unfairly discount street rappers and the truths and perspectives that exist in the art they create. It’s actually cringe as f*** when someone says something like “yeah I listen to rap, but only Kendrick and Lupe and rappers with content, none of that street trash 🤓🤓” and i hear people say s*** like that a disconcerting amount.
Like, yes, Kendrick, Lupe, and all the more traditionally “conscious” rappers are great, but denying the lived experiences and souls of street rappers, that they lay out in their art, is shortsighted and wrong, at least in my opinion.
EDIT: oops, the quote went away, lol. @TroyAveStan i agree with the post you made about how street rappers are just as valid as rappers that are treated as more conscious traditionally
I agree wit this to an extent because even the most street music and rappers of the 90s all came from a perspective of telling their story and or the realities of what’s going on in their community. While talkin they s***.
I think the problem today is rap has become over saturated with artist choosing specifically to rap more about lifestyle than substance. And the lifestyle rap aren’t the same as the past. It’s nothing really endearing about it. A lot of the young “street” rappers today aren’t actually street to begin with just crashouts pushing an image over 808s.
What's wrong with rap is a microcosm of a bigger picture of what's happening in society. People are just tired of soulless art and entertainment in general. And the industry heads keep pushing this garbage. It's no different in the film industry also.
what matters is if song exposes something true and real about ourselves and our world
wav files is a deep song. I miss my og by 454 is a deep song. and at the same time, glory boy by lucki is also a deep song. its all contextual.
100% it doesn’t all have to be boom bap and 70s soul samples to be “deep” but I honestly do feel offended to hear people refer to that as “unc music” or toss it aside because its not a vibe if it isn’t 808s and jersey club drums

I don’t listen to Youngboy but I’ve heard some Sauce wit some soul in it. He be rappin fr

Why do you think they push it?
Cause people show up for it
man this wouldn't need to be a convo if folks stepped it up
This convo is happening because someone is stepping it up and she’s been getting called “Harriet tubman rap” because of it.
Why do you think they push it?

People show up for what they’re told to show up for.
#DooWopWasAHit
And 97% of it was preachy respectability politics. The same s*** that #TheNewNegro today would call wack and corny.
Radio programming, niggas dont pay attention to the “programming” part of that phrase
This convo is happening because someone is stepping it up and she’s been getting called “Harriet tubman rap” because of it.
im not talking about this specific thread and the circumstances that led to it. im talking generally about the criticism of "deep" hiphop. also i don't even believe doechii fits the stereotypical "conscious" rapper anyways
idek why she was grouped into this

There is deep hip hop happening.
The labels dont push or promote it en masse. They dont payola those songs into the #rapcaviar playlists. They dont push it on billboard so when they put rapsody on a top 10 billboard list of female hip hop rappers of 2025, nobody knows “who tf is rapsody” and she ends up getting slandered on the internet in spite of the fact she literally dropped her best album this year.
They push a certain type of music for whatever reason over the “deep” s*** everytime for ….. #reasons
Carti got more soul (devils??) in his music than so called conscious rappers
-lead paint chip diet type post
I’ll always remember how some users on here referred to TPAB as “black trauma p***”
A lot of yall lack the critical thinking skills for conscious rap so u try to belittle it
It’s crazy to me to hear and see people say this.. but big up artist who brag about committing and perpetuating “black trauma” lol

again my point isn't that it isnt happening. im saying that there has been a general decline in all of rap and that stereotypical conscious rap is being hit pretty hard. the only ones that are being pushed at all are rappers like cordae (who are being put in rapcaviar playlists).
s/o rapsody for her great album this year but again my point is that the idea of conscious music that is being presented to the public isn't the best representation of it.
