When Mary J. Blige first came out in 1992, she was unlike anyone that came before. Her Hip Hop, around the way girl energy/fashion sense was next level and unprecedented within the R&B genre. Her sweet, soul stirring vocals over straight up Hip-Hop beats were innovative for the time. Yea Kid Capri did it 3 years earlier on a mixtape but someone that actually made that fusion happen was pretty novel.

Now I'm not talking about Bro-Country or Country Rap . We've seen the Chris Stapletons and Kacy Musgraves go beyond and blend with other genres seamlessly (and even versatility). However, when I mean a "Mary J Blige moment" it's more than just a stylistic shift—it proposes a breakthrough that transcends boundaries, introduces fresh perspectives, and attracts a new audience. Someone that speaks within an urban contemporary style, language or fashion, authentically.

It's a tough genre for those boundaries to break, for obvious reasons. Funnily enough, I've heard DJs blend country vocals over hip hop instrumentals. I've always seen artists from urban contemporary come to that world (Ex. Snoop Dogg, K.Michelle, etc. ) However, I don't truly see the reverse happen.

Do you KTT2 brehs think it could bring a whole new audience? Or is it best to keep it insular? Could it open a whole new gap, even more then what Lil Nas X did

not gonna happen with country but it will happen / already is happening in rock with bar italia, they are gutting a body of water doing shows with neph

the next wave of rock is coming and it will begin to infiltrate the mainstream by artists who are able to be unapologetically themselves while genuinely interacting with urban / hip hop culture

it just is in its infancy but that big artist is currently working on their debut rn

This song in particular is what inspired Puff Daddy to work the Hip Hop Soul concept with Mary J Blige. An unofficial remix:

lil nas x was the closest to that happening in country but its a niche genre thats depedent on appealin to a specific audience

with the election around the corner no a&r or music exec is looking to dump cash into an edgy country artist that can break boundaries i just dont see it happening with the climate
