At the end of the day if the music is good then it's good

But if you have writers you can never be in the "best rappers / lyricists" category

“Ghostwriting” to me is an inherently s***ty practice because why are you hiding the name’s of the people who contributed creatively to this piece of art?

There’s nothing wrong with Credited writing from other people, but I’d also like to see more specifics as what role they played in the music making process, because a lot of artists who are sampled and producers are credited as “writers” and that’s not really accurate. I think music credits for an album should be more like a Movie

It would also help people see these artists as part of a bigger collaboration process rather than this perfect human being who is doing this all on their own, so fans don’t Stan and idolize artists like they are some kind of god

    Short answer: Yes

    Long answer: Depends on

    • whats being written
    • whether or not the artist NEEDS writers
    • if the artist is trying to hide the writers
    • how much are you using writers vs you writing

It's more nuanced than hip hop wants to admit.

    FASHION DEMON

Most rappers have ghostwriters (Kanye, Drake etc.)

That being said, I think some rappers would be way better off having writers like Travis or Uzi

Neither of these guys have ghostwriters

Ghostwriting is pretty nasty because you’re presenting the music and passing it off as something you chef’d when in actually you (or your team) is hiding the writer. That’s nasty

Co-writing itself is fine, and happens 24/7. I think fans need to realize that co-writing doesn’t inherently mean someone can’t rap.

Everyone can write a 16. But if we’re making music and someone comes up with a better line or two, or a better rhyme scheme, does that mean I can’t rap? Not at all, it just means that while cooking I liked what this writer came up with more than what I came up with so I’m rolling with it.

For me it would only be a big deal if the act was a rapper that was flat out not writing any of his verses, but that actually is RARE these days. Everyone can rap, everyone that gets to the point of being lit, probably wrote their raps 100% of the time so I see no harm in occasionally outsourcing lines and verses. It happens with EVERYONE

Niggas don’t actually believe guys like Hov and Kendrick have written 100% of their bars right?

If you think hov and Kendrick have never worked off of a template / concept / reference demo…man…

yea nobody thinks that like we tolerate getting song structure ideas or getting bars from ur boys in the studio n s*** like that

but yea hov n kendrick definitely wrote the vast majority of their s***, to a point where yea we can basically call it writing all their own music

  • I don’t give a s*** damn or f*** about it

I’m pretty sure most rappers write the majority of their s***

but to say that Hov and Kendrick are responsible for virtually of their lines and bars is some Santa clause s*** lol all I’m saying is everyone has co-wrote and collaborated with someone, plenty of times even.

Kanye’s different because you never know when the co-writing ends and the Kanye bars begins. I feel like every song has a bunch of writers on it

ok but lets be honest w guys like hov kendrick nas etc where they basically live to rap, the lines that aren't from their brain are probably like 3-5% of their total discog

    insignificant

How do you know that 😂

    It’s like

When niggas get beats and ideas sent to them with demos on them, demo verses, etc that’s co-writing

When a nigga gets ideas and suggestions from someone else in the stu about verses and s*** that’s co-writing

When a Nigga flat out uses lines from the writer there that’s obviously co-writing

To think your favorite rapper hasn’t engaged in any of the aforementioned is hilarious
