I don’t think Kendrick has bad beat selection I just wouldn’t go so far as to put it above everyone else rapping right now. I think a lot of people who are a little more underground are picking more interesting beats than Kendrick (Mach-Hommy, Spook, al.divino, Westside Gunn, Tha God Fahim, Roc Marciano), but, to be fair, those artists are also not in any sort of pop realm and are therefore in a better position to truly do whatever.

He consistently picks good beats and tracks that work for him

His selection isn’t my personal favorite but I’ve never heard a Kendrick song and thought “why tf did he rap on that”

WSG, Mach pick the same 5 beats just different variations of them. Gunn has gotten too sleepy these days.

Roc produces his own.. I like the more experimental route he's gone Pimps Don't Wear Rabbits, Bed Spring etc.

Kendrick goes on anything, live instruments, boom bap, trap etc. Rock, Jazz... his ear is eclectic

When Ross really wants to get in his bag he ain't playin

Yes without a doubt...His stuff is pure musical composition while other rappers are just "picking beats"

I don't think anybody in hip hop music even come close except Kanye West.

Mach’s beat selection is more varied than it seems on the surface; all of the stuff you listed Kendrick rapping over can be found in Mach’s catalogue save for maybe trap (you can find a trap song or two from back in the day where he did a feature, though). West has been picking a lot of really slow beats these past few projects but I dunno, I just don’t personally enjoy Kendrick’s beat selection more than any of the guys I named. Just kind of over Kendrick, too, I guess, so I’m also a little biased in that respect. I never listen to him or even hardly think about him anymore. I’d forgotten I’d even commented in this thread initially.

I gotta get more into Mach man, tbh Covid has impacted my ear as I've listened more of non current music. I've been on this weird classical chase but anyways. I liked the Lemonade project alot, I know his most recent record is amazing but it just hasn't clicked yet. Also been a minute since I've heard the Fahim records too so there's a little forgetfulness there.

Gotta check out the other two brothas you mentioned. Also there's a rapper whose in the Roc, Mach, WSG lane but his voice sounds like 6ix9ine. Do you know who I'm referring to? I didn't bookmark him and forgot his name lol

I wonder if Kendrick's musical composition will ever be matched.

Tpab is both the best produced and best musically composed album we've ever heard in hip hop music. Fuack, like Herbie Hancock said, it's even a top 5 album in ANY GENRE

Haha AHNKLEJOHN, maybe? He and Rome Streetz are both kind of shouty.
Mach’s got a lot of projects but they’re definitely worth listening to. I would definitely check out HBO, Fete des Morts and Bulletproof Luh next if you’ve only heard MHL and P4H so far; all three are on streaming now and they’ve all got great production. It feels weird calling a guy I didn’t even know existed before 2017 my favorite rapper but that’s what he quickly became.
Spook’s has two projects out called Niggas Is Magic (Or ‘Meme Magick’ If You White) and N.S.F.W that are both fully produced by this guy Sadhugold. and available exclusively on his Bandcamp. Both Philly dudes, both very good at what they do. Kind of DOOM-esque but with more sociopolitical references. Sadhu. also raps but the only thing he’s put out so far where he’s rapping the whole time is this album called Czardust with a producer named Ohbliv.
al.divino is in that Mach/West Wu-Tang kind of pocket but with even more experimental production, a lot of which he does himself. My favorite projects of his are Monumentality and Facemelt, both fully self-produced. Rapping’s probably better on Monumentality but Facemelt has weirder, more varied beats.
Fahim is a better lyricist in 2021 than he ever has been, in my opinion, but I’ve always loved both his ear for beats and the beats he makes, from the boombap stuff to weirder stuff like “Butterfly Lady”.
What classical music have you been listening to?

    No. TPAB proves this.

Drake and Carti still have best production.
