Snoop had the greatest debut a rapper could have and Em and 50 really only got as big as they did because Dre learned how to bring a rapper into the game from Snoop. People bring up Doggystyle did 800k first week and outsold the people he did but what many don't realize is that week 2 he sold 870k and went number 1 again. Even if he couldn't make an album on the same level as Doggystyle (GOAT hip hop album arguably) you can't say he hasn't released incredible music since then. Even today he's dropping great verses and can stand toe to toe with some of today's rappers. Given where he is as an international icon today you can say Snoop has had as good of a career as a hip hop artist can have
doggystyle is goat tier tho. and i dont think many people have dived into his other albums. s***, i havent played a lot from his late 90s - early 2000s s*** in years.
hes got some good stuff in between.
I was listening to No Limit Top Dogg and it had some bangers on it

all of his albums did great numbers, he just didnt drop anything spectacular and his music got lost in the shuffle. too many classics and guys dropping 10/10 s*** in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Don't act like his No Limit run was just trash
Not trash ofc. That final 5-8 year run from the late 90s to the mid 00s he was still dropping good stuff. But the damage had been done imo he never really regained top tier status.
I believe Eazy would’ve went a similar route as Snoop. Fade away from gangsta image to more of a pimp image. In many ways, Snoop was Eazy like in that his image and charisma was just out of this world early on
yeah i feel that, if Snoop wasn't going through a murder trial him and Dre prolly would've doubled down on either another Dre album or Snoop's second and it prolly would've came out in 95. they for sure would have been in a better space riding super high off of doggystyle success which basically positioned those two as the kings of rap by 1994 but we never got their victory lap at the pinnacle of gangsta rap
The problem with snoop is that he went to no limit. It furthered his fall off. Imagine if he wouldve gone to another westcoast label instead.
I think its funny snoop and eminem got beef. Im sure snoop was always jealous em was his next protege

Fr it’s crazy to think about. Snoop couldn’t even enjoy his run at the top. Was scared s***less he was going to jail for 3 years while Doggystyle was running rap.

Yeah it was a weird choice but as someone itt said he did make decent records there.

Idk bruh ive heard the albums and they were f***ing terrible. The production was ass. Decent i can afford to lose.

Why I threw out there that he may have been a product of Dre
Snoop is an icon and a national treasure but yes musically he was a product of Dr. Dre. A big part of Snoop's stunted growth was the horrible fit of the No Limit years, im sure protection and being on a hot label was the idea but musically it was a major miss.
Tbh I would say his popularity peeked again with Dre's 2001 and if he would have released a full Dre produced album around that time it would have been on a Doggystyle level. The Up In Smoke Tour was huge and put him right in front of a new audience.

Dre just had the perfect sound to fit his voice and style tbh. Probably the best unofficial duo in rap history.

the murder trial while his career was at its precipice and dr. dre leaving death row is responsible for Snoops fall off. the no limit move was one of the best he could've made and it was an ahead of its time move. the music wasn't that good but he stayed relevant and learned a different side of the game
@op you a goat bro. I probably said it a couple times before but these threads are mad interesting.

good insight
I said this before but not many rappers can be consistent like Ye, Kendrick, Hov, or even Nas. And, even they have had a few duds or misses(minus Kendrick).
Many rappers haves highs and lows in their discography. I'm a big Wayne fan and I'll be the first to tell you that Wayne's mixtape catalog >>>>> his albums generally speaking.
Snoop has an average discography that's not any worse than the average rapper.

Appreciate it g
