It has potential though. We've had MBDTF for a decade, so in hindsight, we can see how important the features were, but really, they were just relevant artists at the time.

Donda's features are just that, relevant artists of our time. So thats not a valid stance imo. Production is on point, the choir elements really do it for me. This album is just as ambitious as MBDTF, you just cant see it yet. Once it drops and give it a few years, we'll be able to see better.

I knew how good MBDTF was the moment it dropped. It painted the perfect picture of what Kanye was going through (IMO TLOP does a good job of this too but a bit more chaotic). You could really tell that was his peak from start to finish and he gace us the insight what that feels like for him.

Even though there are moments in the Donda album that gives us insight in Kanye's feelings , struggles and experiences its done not enough.

Also the features on MBDTF felt like an addition to Kanye and his verses while that isnt the case with Donda. Thats why ppl making a comparison to Kanye being a bit like DJ khaled on this album or that it feels too much like Cruel Summer

Ofcourse we havent heard the finished Donda and alot of issues could still be fixed, but I dont see it ever surpassing MBDTF

If people heard MBDTF 2, then nobody would throw around comparison to DJ Khaled.
Some people even say that it's like a DJ Khaled project but where guests actually care. Will you say the same about Monster, So Appalled?

And I wouldn't talk about an albim concept with this one because it just feels so all over the place and not in a good way

It's like a party where you invited your best friends to your mom's birthday like Pusha T, Jay Z, Kid Cudi, but then somebody was like Hey, these are Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, Baby Keem, Fivio, etc. They wanted to go to the club but it's closed, can they hang out with us?

I don't even mean Khaled like the standard for quality but more like an example of when dude picks up features and produces and doesn't participate in the projecrt himself.

i can't trust anyones opinion that doesn't rank Ye and JIK dead last

    Jik and Ye obviously

    TLOP is still debatable

But I think I agree with you OP

    And I loved TLOP

  • Aug 12, 2021

2nd listening party solidified Donda being better than TLOP for me

  • Aug 12, 2021

i think he realizes he wants to be on the album more and just features aren't gonna cut it probably doesn't feel personal enough. who knows though, i think we're still gonna hear changed verses and maybe even new songs

I think albums changed with the times. Features are being used in different ways now, instead of just being a guest feature, they're being used more like instruments. With the artist being the master curator.

Personally, I don't need to hear ye sing every chorus or rap every verse.

Man, that's a lot of copium. Do you really like music made by Kanye West? Or do you like music curated by him?
The problem is that it's still labeled not as Cruel Summer, but as a solo Kanye record.
Also on that Not OK, or I'M OK, I can't remember the name, but on that track Kanye uses Drake's flow, so by your logic shouldn't he just invite Drake if track demands it?
You know how there is Gorillaz and some fans unsatisfied by the vocal absence of Damon Albarn in some tracks, but Albarn has solo albums where he performs normally. Why Kanye does this strange stuff while pretending like it's a completely normal situation.
Sorry for the long post. He could give all these artists like Fivio and Carti and Baby Keem awesome tracks for their solos with actually interesting and not dated Kanye feature. This would be much cooler.

  • Aug 12, 2021

Just might be. Or at minimum on par with TLOP.

  • Aug 12, 2021

His Jesus Lord verse is better than anything on TLOP. Saint Pablo comes close though.

No I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that, Kanye has always done this, actually, he's led the charge of the curatorial approach to album making. MBDTF, he used a lot of artists to execute his vision. And it worked. He's BEEN doing this. He used Nicki minaj as a tool on monster, instead of a guest verse. Everything was directed to what was best for the album. He's not the best singer, so gets singers to do choruses often.

thinking An artist at kanye's level is not gonna use a lot of features strategically is insane. I think the best Ye albums are an experience, and I think Donda is meant to be an experience. Not a testament to how good at rapping he is or anything like that.
