Not sure how you don't critique an artist when critiquing their albums. Whatever state of mind their in contributed to making the album

    Eh it’s a fine line

Shiiit let me know when you come across one man

I haven’t seen a rap review that actually examined the music in years

Idk man to me it’s simple asf, if I’m reviewing a rap album I’m asking myself: are these flows hard? Are these bars hard? Is this production fire? Is the execution of everything such as recording mixing sequencing etc on point? Does the overall theme and vibe of the project feel special? Is there minimal filler?

Her Loss checks all them boxes. Don’t see how you could give it a negative score UNLESS you worried about the wrong s*** like who Drake is OUTSIDE of his music, his level of maturity as a man, whose butt hurt over his disses, etc. All that s*** is weird asf for a ā€œprofessionalā€ music pub to be writing about but what do I know

Ok let's keep it on Pitchfork. Check this one out (disregard the score, just text) and let me know if it's a review that would make you wanna check out the project, whether you're a Freddie fan or not.

Jesus is King review by Anthony Fantano was mostly Fantano saying that he was crazy and basically critiquing how true he was to Christianity and his faith lol, picking apart a man’s faith more so than the music. That kind of thing has definitely been present in Kanye reviews since 2016

Most pitchfork reviews are guilty of this, it’s always been a critique that their reviews focus more on who an artist is than the actual music

But you also didn’t just say the ā€œas a personā€ part, you said no one tells other artists what music to make either. That’s really the sillier part of your post but I see you’re not really doubling down on that one.

Still when an artist is as big as drake i don’t think it’s very uncommon

That’s how he reviewed JIK forreal?

Yeah I'm not hating bro, I just find I don't return to these new albums as much as I did with his prior ones. Music doesn't have to be relatable, but it's nice when the content is different from album to album.

Naw I’m not coming at you like you are hating . Just having a dialogue about the thought process. I can agree Kendrick for example has varied content in terms subject matter and it’s distinct from project to project.

But also progression is interesting because i care more about progress on a technical level and playful attempts at new flows and ways of engaging with the music sonically . I feel drake has been going upward in terms of that regard

  • Nov 8, 2022

Drake hasn't "gone pop" he had Let's Call It Off and Little Bit on SFG and Karaoke and Find Your Love on TML. He always knew who he was. The greatest HER LOSS OUT NOW

Yeah I’m going off memory ofc but I remember feeling like in that review he crossed the line of focusing too much on Ye as a person. And that’s been common for Ye stuff for a minute so idk why people think it’s only drake who gets that (drake Stan victim complex I suppose)

Yeah that's pretty much it, I'm not even asking for Drake to do the same lol, think it's good to have artists that just stick to what they know & he does that well.

Do wish we got more songs like Nice For What but is what it is.
