At least Drake didn't give us downright unplayable music like Kendrick purposely did, I'll give him that.

  • Jun 18, 2022

Its experimental FOR drake. No one said house is a new thing. However these house tracks he's making are not typical house tracks either so in that sense it's a leap forward

Idk how Drake dropping a whole afro house album can be considered him “not experimenting”

Kendrick is one of Eminem’s biggest supporters in the game I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he was paying homage. It’s very clearly in the same vein as Kim. I’m not the only person who thinks that.

He really should of extended the sax intro and done something more with it

The beats he’s rapping over are highly unconventional (for the most part, before you bring up a song like Purple Hearts), the things he’s rapping about are highly unconventional (things like transgender people and molestation in his community), and the structure of the album being a therapy session instead of a playlist like most albums nowadays. Not to mention one of the songs paying homage to one of the darkest songs in hip-hop history.

Yes this is a new territory for drake in terms of making a full on, focused dance album. He hasn’t done that before, but it’s a sound he’s done and done well in the past. He just honed in on it which is dope, the album is incredible. However it’s not experimental at all, and not really experimental in the same way an album like MMBS is.

Definitely not the thread to make this argument. People who have never heard house music in their lives think Drake invented it now. It's a departure from his stagnating career and has to be hailed as a transcendent project and not the fun, good album it is. Kendrick's album is eclectic and chaotic and not subject to a narrow confine. The only avant garde moment between the two albums is Kodak Black over a piano though, a radical juxtaposition of low and high art that works flawlessly. I'd call MMBS a more substantive project. There's just a lot more to it. Drake album lives or dies on the beats and house song structures and sticky vocal leads that lots of dance music has.

It's honestly a trap to compare them outside of the fact that both guys sound like they made the album they wanted to make with the only real concession being Jimmy Cooks. I think Kendrick's album is obviously the one that showcases a personality and a broad range of emotion though. Drake is showcasing a genre to his core audience. We can appreciate both and it's so boring to have to disparage one.

Also, this is not a rap album.

I’ve had my issues with Drake projects in the past and I tend to like Kendrick more but I’m not deaf 😂 people get so caught up in there alliances and biases that they litterally go deaf to the actual music. Like… we can’t possibly be hearing the same s*** 😂

I wasn’t feeling CLB. I really personally did feel like that s*** was good quality Drake music but I found it boring because of the lack of innovation imo but this s***? How can you not respect the man’s artistry on here?

People fallen into the “it’s cool to trash drake” narrative every time on social media, a new project drops. At this time it’s just the norm.

Don’t get me wrong I know why you would make the comparison but it just seems kind of obvious and surface level imo, especially considering Kim doesnt have 1/10 of the nuance that WCT has so rrducing it to just that is reductive

Dawg I said this is new territory for Drake because he’s never created a full on album like this before. Songs like Signs, Passionfruit, Madiba Riddim, etc are all times he’s explored this sound before. This is just the first time he’s honed in on the sound and made an album with it. And it’s incredible.

This album really shines when you look at in context of his discography. He didn't take any safe moves that he knew would work.

Fair tbh. I think I’ve only listened to it two or three times since it dropped so I can’t add too much to the conversation, i’ll have to listen again. However off my initial few listens I do agree I expected something much better(especially with all the “smoking on top 5’s” talk)
