Like you guys know Drake didn’t debut in 2018 right?
He comes from the era where you bought or pirated music and he was still incredibly successful back then
Of course he was, no one said he wasn’t.
But he also didn’t have a single Diamond song prior to streaming, and by the end of this decade he’ll most likely have like 12 minimum
People in here diminishing streaming making it out like its easier when streaming artists generally have a shorter life span than artists did 20+ years ago in the physical era lol
Exactly, which is why I said it’s silly to act like he’s one of the artists who is only selling well because of streaming.
But at the same time, all of these records and accolades and Diamond songs he’s acquiring have all been post-streaming, so he’s definitely benefited heavily from it
Oh word okay we acc agree with each other then
Sorry I just got off my 9 hour shift misinterpreted your post
People in here diminishing streaming making it out like its easier when streaming artists generally have a shorter life span than artists did 20+ years ago in the physical era lol
But again, that’s another negative result of streaming in and of itself
All this music dropping it’s hard for an artist or album to really capture people’s attention for longer than a week

Yeah absolutely and like people wanna talk about objective sales but like the argument is always “Well Drake wouldn’t survive in the 80s” or “if streaming was out in the 90s nirvana would be 12x diamond” or something
Which like s***, maybe idk
its all hypothetical

Basically

Of course he was, no one said he wasn’t.
But he also didn’t have a single Diamond song prior to streaming, and by the end of this decade he’ll most likely have like 12 minimum
going off streams alone he probably has multiple diamond songs he hasn’t certified yet
I just think RIAA needs to tweak how streaming units are converted into sales, or, and this might be controversial, I think they should institute some sort of time limit for how long a song or album can generate additional sales units via streams
going off streams alone he probably has multiple diamond songs he hasn’t certified yet
Yes, I know.
My point is that without streaming, he most likely would not have double digit Diamond records by the end of this decade. Just saying he’s benefited heavily from the system

before the streaming era he was only 6 years into his commercial career (2008-2014), drake definitely was the first to take adavtange of streaming thru his album music deal but he was already on his way to his prime regardless

what would a time limit accomplish? as time passes streaming will only make up a bigger share of how people listen to music
Yes, I know.

i think hotline bling still probably would’ve gone diamond eventually but i agree

The time limit on SEA units would limit some of these ridiculous records and accolades being broken. In 30-40 years, most major artists will have at minimum 5-7 Diamond records each.
The fact that the artist with the most Diamond records EVER dropped his debut album in 2016 should tell you that the system is broken right now
Of course he was, no one said he wasn’t.
But he also didn’t have a single Diamond song prior to streaming, and by the end of this decade he’ll most likely have like 12 minimum
He also got bigger during streaming lol
He's close to having diamond albums
He also got bigger during streaming lol
He's close to having diamond albums
Yes, I’m just saying he’s benefited from it and that a lot of these accolades he’s been breaking recently are directly related to the streaming system

the thing is though, your asking for this to be done solely because of what drake is doing
its not like were hearing how every x,y,z new rapper is getting diamond plaques (unelss its a legit real smash hit that deserves it like XO Tour Life for uzi i think is diamond and deserves it)
we aint in here like f*** man lil durk just got his 3rd diamond single
for reference, how many streaming era artists do you see in the top 15 best selling SINGLES artists according to RIAA (updated as of October 20, 2023, before drake updated his stats to 200+mil):

Drake benefited a lot from streaming as an artist from the CD era, maybe it was his very dedicated core fanbase coexisting alongside his pop audience
But for some reason he just got it instantly in a way almost nobody else did
Idt thats something to scoff at

It’s not solely because of Drake. Post Malone has 8 Diamond singles, the most ever. I think that sums up pretty well that the system is flawed

Kanye did too if we’re being fr
Pablo and views were the catalyst for the streaming era to truly take off, as well as a reintroduction of the artists for a new generation
Kids these days love kanye especially Pablo

i mean post legit had back-to-back-back-to-back-back-to-back smash hits on smash hits
should he not deserve it? he was a singles artists for years dropping absolute smashes as a lead artist and as a feature
his songs were everywhere you went to the point you began to hate his s*** cus u were always hearing it
