Like he leans into poppier elements in subject matter mostly for instance

If he started talking more abstractly about relationships or wealth or whatever then he’d be just like frank but he doesn’t even have to do that and one way isn’t invalid because the musical roots are still really sophisticated in both approaches

Wouldn’t it be accessible rather than maximalist then?

Yeah maximalist not the word for that. But I see what ur saying.

But to ur point It's because he's the most popular artists out, which cause people to unnecessarily classify anything he drop as just generic pop rap.

He also gets unfair criticism like the people that call him a culture vulture or says he wave rides just to turn around and say he does the same thing over and over

  • It’s a really weird point in his career to be having this take

this is the entire problem w what youre saying though

if music is subjective and x style is just as valid as y, then this whole idea of grouping artists into tiers and saying drake deserves to be at a certain tier is meaningless

if we're using something objective like how "complex" the production is or how "abstract" the songwriting is then yeah he isnt on their level lol

youre basically saying people who value certain things in music should respect drakes music like frank oceans because he does other things really well, which makes no sense

  • Feel like there was a lot more pushback 2013-2017 which is when he was putting out his best music

Drake have the ability to make something groundbreaking, it’s just he care more about numbers and hits n s***. Even throughout this mid era post views he’s shown flashes of pure greatness.

i think he's made at least one groundbreaking album (take care) and some other classics (nwts, iyrtitl) but otherwise, i wouldn't say he only cares about numbers. he seems to have some passion for music but i think his problem lies with indecisiveness

Yeah I’ve been having this realization too. Specifically with Kanye because they’re so similar as artists, it’s not like a Drake/Kendrick where you can really see the polarization

  • Apr 1, 2022

    He makes algorithm music

take in, scorpion was heavily inspired by life after death and drake in general is heavily inspired by biggie and this nigga still put out scorpion i dont think it was because he was chasing hits, but because i dont think drake is confident. he lost it just like rocky. i blame rihanna

how does drake make similar music to kanye? drake never made an 808’s, yeezus, ksg or any other slightly ‘weird’ album.

  • Apr 1, 2022

You say Drake makes similar music to what music virgins listen to but really it's the opposite lol. Kanye/Frank as you mentioned experiment a lot and always sound different when they drop. CLB dropped and sounded like a bot auto generated a Drake album

Drake good in my book. He’s given me enough good music at this point idrc if his output ain’t straight

I gotta wonder whether he has any ambition left in that regard

Last time he clearly tried was Views

he def tried on CLB and it really showed in the production and some of the bars

I just think hes kind of cooked songwriting wise + he slapped a bunch of filler on there too
