Rap caviar has a podcast now, they're 4 episodes in. It's a Spotify branded podcast so it's quite vanilla and polished and don't want to offend artists.

Their first few episodes were positive topics, who's on rap's mount rushmore, who are the next big 3, what is kendrick lamars best album. Since they did a Kendrick episode I expected a Drake one to be next and I wondered the theme - it pops up today and of course, it's negative. "Has Drake peaked?"

Carl Cherry created Rap Caviar and is head of hip hop at Spotify. He is very close with pg lang and has never met Drake. Whenever Drake is mentioned he goes out of his way to put Kendrick above him. Expect more stuff like this from Spotify around Drake/Kendrick. They don't f*** with him

Makes sense why Drake leans more towards Apple and has never done much with Spotify

Drake being successful is good for Spotify, they have a vested interest in him being popular cause it means people use their app more

It's especially evident after their shameless promotion of Scorpion, its just a case of those people on that podcast that no one besides you listens to don't like him, so what!

Maybe they tried to do the promo deal they did for Kendrick’s latest album for CLB and he turned them down lol! They are probably salty. “Opinions over statistics of course”

Thanks op for the very interesting info. That’s also why they’re sending to premium users via mail the “rank Kendrick’s discography” thing. If you go check Carl Chery on IG you can also see he’s a longtime Kendrick / keem Stan and he doesn’t hide it.

nah they don't have a vested interest in him being popular, they just benefit from supporting whoever the biggest artist is because they want the biggest % of their streams. doesn't matter who the artist is

it is lowkey weird though how you only ever hear convos about Drake peaking, rarely ever about Cole/Kendrick etc tho, even though their best albums are all regarded to be like 6+ years ago at this point, a lot like Drake.

    Exactly what I was thinking

  • Imo Drake peaked NWTS-IYRTITL

He's made a lot of good music since then but I feel like no project he has made since those have really come close besides More Life. I personally love Honestly Nevermind but still doesn't really come close to those.

I don't really see it as a diss necessarily. Every artist peaks but not every artist can sustain themsevles after they do. Drake, Kanye, J.Cole, Kendrick ect. Are some of the few that can and that's why their held at such high regards in hip-hop.

Drake peaked 7-9 years ago, depending on which era of you prefer between NWTS and IYRTITL. I still think NWTS is his best album. Drake is more of a singles artist at this point.

But that happens all the time. It's arguable that Kendrick artistically peaked with TPAB in 2015 and commercially peaked in 2017, pretty similar to Drake (I would say Drake's commercial peak was Views in 2016). He's still making creatively vital music though.

Looking at my top 100 Drake songs there is a good mixture of 2011 - today, so imo he is still going high

You bring up a great point, Negative drake content must bring in views & $ tbh, if you look through YouTube for example. There is much more drake hate than praise.
