Yeah I just think it’s diff with rap cuz it’s about your life and s***. So having someone write like let’s say 9 am in Dallas is crazy. The thing is we don’t know the process of how they do the music. Like is drizzy writing the lyrics and getting people to rap it in style or are others writing full thing and giving it back to him so he can do that himself

i was honestly disappointed when I heard ref for iyrtitl man. Like I don’t want drake to use writers for his rap s*** so it def made me look at him different then. I don’t care about singing ref or anything like that but that really hurt man

yeah i mean drake could've written and rapped 90% of these songs and then these guys hopped on and rapped using his lyrics and flow to just clean up the edges etc or to express an idea, easier to show how a line might fit when you rap the entire hook vs telling them just 1 line

ref tracks dont bother me too much, all big artists use writers and drake has been the most open and honest about it out of anyone else

cant go on a decade long run without some help, and we're talking about like 1 or 2 songs on a 24 song album which was the third project released in a year not like we're talking about almost every song in his catalogue

The issue is usually people who engage with this stuff are usually being disingenuous or they just don’t understand it.

The main artist could have done most of the track but another collaborator would suggest doing something different to make the track flow better or they suggest how the song should sound.

Yuh that’s why I say it’s a bad look when ref get leaked. cuz we have zero idea the process of how everything goes and people just gonna go “oh s*** drake got ghost writers!” When he could have literally wrote everything and just gotten help with the flow.

yeah and i mean end of day we likely will never know the true story, so thats why to me it just doesnt bother me much

maybe its because i work in a creative type role and i see how those kinds of processes work idk

this isn't true btw there's plenty of rappers who don't use co-writers or have ghostwriters. The only difference now is that it's been completely normalized to the point where being exposed for it doesn't hurt your career.

I'd argue Kanye was the first to normalize it in rap but early on in his career he would have his co-writers defend him and downplay their role as writers on his albums because he knew he'd lose credibility if the word got out. It wasn't til later on when him and his co-writers started promoting him as more of a composer or director probably to counter the criticism he was getting for not producing beats from scratch anymore.

I don't think having writers is a knock against him or Drake as artists but it should automatically exclude them from any GOAT rapper list.

I won’t speak about Goat rapper standpoint but major hitmaker stand point you can agree with, as long as he’s crediting them as cowriters. Anyways this is not something that’s new it’s been ongoing for years with drake if it hasn’t hurt his career now it never will

The bad thing about ref track leaks is it makes it seem that whoever is on it wrote the lyrics, when thats not true.

if he had dispelled alot of those millie rumours early on it would have never been nearly as a big deal during the beef
