Most Hip Hop legends had one or two big albums and then slowly or quickly became mediocre.
The 10s had stronger Hip Hop albums than the 90s. Production being a key factor to this.
Kendrick Lamar isn't a reason for this tho.
Dark Side of the Moon, while immensely influential, is mid-tier Floyd and not that good in general.
Taylor Swift is mediocre.
-Most modern rap fans have no concept of "average" or "okay" anymore. They either label an artist "GOAT" or "trash" based on their tastes which makes rap discussions more polarizing than before.
-Hov's music career is overrated. He's still a GOAT and has a great run. But, without the Ye/Beyonce association and Samsung inflating his sales, he'd be no bigger than Nas in the 2010's.
-IWW deserves more praise than Illmatic for its lyricism and song concepts.

Nothing hot about the last one
To Pimp a Butterfly is a superficial and, ultimately, middle-of-the-road album from an artist who lacks the visceral energy of Public Enemy and Tackhead while also lacking the poetic depth of Kanye West and the musical genius of El-P.

“And the musical genius of El-P”

I don’t think the word superficial really has the weight you intend for it when your point of the comparison is the most surface level, strictly-aesthetics minded, “gotta call in the writers for serious stuff” artist in rap
Niggas not about to push this “Wayne is overrated” narrative
I seen him carve his legacy in real time that nigga deserves all the love
bro it’s ridiculous, these kids are clueless when it comes to wayne

That was a copy pasta but I wouldn’t say aesthetics are necessarily surface level
Only artist to fumble a collab with the biggest Popstar of their time
Lady Gaga couldn’t save him so how could I
He definitely had all of his biggest hits after her tho, he didn’t need Gaga

people say s*** like this as if most of wayne’s output since 2011 hasn’t been complete s*** or the stuff of his that really pops is his generic khaled or pop features. like no s*** these kids don’t know, wayne hasn’t dropped a good album in a decade

Ignorance is not an excuse buddy
Even when Wayne was dropping “shit” he was still topping charts so no matter in what avenue whether it be as a rapper or a commercial act, Wayne always dominated
The fact that so many books still name Drake as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rapper ever only tells you how far rap music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rap critics, instead, are still blinded by commercial success. Drake sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rap critics are often totally ignorant of the rap music of the past, they barely know the best sellers.
Jay Z is the most overrated artist, not just rapper, of all time. Drake is following in his footsteps

Well to be fair, jazz & classical were never seen as commercial genres like Pop which Rap is now turning into or already has even tho it was never set out to be that way in the beginning. I mean the music industry didn’t even start till the late 1800s and even then took well into the 1900s to pick up steam and to be seen as profitable. So the discussions will be different with later genres
I feel like we do get two different audiences in rap tho, traditionalists who acknowledge the artists ability over everything else and those who look solely on the commercial success of an artist but most combine the two when we discuss the greats

Bro you finna be a boomer if you dont come to terms that one day 20 years from now. Nobody will give a s*** about drake, kendrick, and lil wayne. In fact they will say that they s*** is wack or boring because music is evolving. I argued with an old man the other day just to piss him off, i said John lennon a b**** ass nigga cus he got clapped and died and he didnt even own a pair of grillz. While camron got clapped and drovd himself to the hospital in a pink lambo and left the same day and he owns a pair of grillz. He was baffled.
