  • I've f***ed up.

I've wasted so much time with college and it's just not for me, I hate it.

I left a couple years back for an electrician apprenticeship, and I hated that.
I think it was more the company I worked with than anything else, I also didn't like the industrial work, I would have preferred residential (wiring houses, offices etc.)
I just picked the wrong trade.

I ended up going back to college because I thought I'd get through it..
I can't, it's sad to say but I honestly cannot study, I can't sit at a desk and write essays on management thought.
I probably have ADHD, but at least I can work on physical tasks, I like working my hands.
I've no problem coming home from work and going straight out helping my father with the decking.

I'm just tried of making mistakes.
I'm 23, I don't want to be 24 working retail or in some dead end factory job.

So I'm thinking of going back to doing an apprenticeship.

Plumbing and HVAC/Refrigeration are the obvious two, both can be/usually are more residential, they're not on big building sites doing the same monotonous work, you're fixing things and doing more small jobs.
I'm fine with dirty work, I'd rather be in doors rather than outdoors when it's pissing rain.

So I'm thinking of learning a trade..
I just hope I'm not making yet another mistake.
But how do I know if I am or not?

OP, at some point you're going to have to just bite the bullet and commit. If your school experience is as bad as you describe it, then I don't see why you're even debating staying there. If you like working with your hands, then go into working with your hands.

If you don’t like college then don’t waste anyone’s time and money staying...

It’s not the end all be all, but tbh it seems like you don’t know what you actually want to do. May want to be sure about what you actually want to do for a living before looking into trades...

I've known that for years, that's my problem.
My problem is that I have a track record of f***ing up, I really don't want to continue that..

I don't know what I want to do.

    I haven't a clue..

I know I like working with my hands.
I get pissed off working in the pissing rain in the middle of winter, I don't want to get into something that's just back breaking labour, I want some skill/knowledge to it..

I want to start my own business, I want to work for myself and grow a company, but that doesn't come out of thin air I need a basis for that.
So I'm thinking of just grafting it out, get a trade and go from there..
    Which one I don't know.
I though electrician but that probably aint it..

Plumbing has a lot of money, especially if you can do emergency 24/hr service to residential customers.

But what you need to do is look at trades that you find interesting, and shadow someone for a day and see if it's for you, that way you'll know for sure before committing

  • Apr 12, 2021

    college is a scam

  • Apr 12, 2021

nope you're on the right track exactly

If you feel like college isn't the best investment in yourself (which is pretty much always is if it requires you taking on tons of debt) then going into a trade where you can make money as you learn is the best choice

I'm in grad school for physical therapy and my brother dropped out of school to be an electrician and he'll probably make more money than me -- and if he doesn't, he'll at least do so without being crippled by debt.

    good luck brother

Trade is good, and if you move right you can make a lot of money to invest into stock and crypto to get more income.

College is time and built different for a lot of people.

S*** you can do trade and learn other stuff online on your own time to build yourself up.

You are better off doing you and what makes you happy in the long run. Had a friend that went 5 years in a college to learn Engineering and making nearly 100k.

He is still paying off his debt, has no interest in the actual engineering job and comes off rather needy as a result. Everything he does just feels weird.

There are guys who lived on less and had a fulfilling life solely because they did what they want and tried to please themselves and not anyone else.

The faster you please yourself, the easier your life will feel because you will be in control of your actions.

could look into learning how to build computer hardware/engineering? @op

Regardless you're going to need to work for money even if it is retail or a basic admin job while you try and get things rolling

I've been working in a supermarket for the past year and a half, I'm hoping to get some experience in a trade over the summer before I decide what exactly it is I want to pursue, I'll be keeping my supermarket job in the mean time.

  • Apr 12, 2021

College is not for everyone. If you think you'd be happier with a trade and like the career path of going that route, just do it instead of succumbing to sunk cost fallacy.

Make sure you detail a plan of what you're going to do, and realize the pros and cons of taking up a trade.

For example, yes, you're working with your hands, but working with your hands means you'll be in a world of pain and trouble later down the line if you don't take care of your body. You'll initially make a lot of money compared to your peers, but most trades taper off quite hard compared to high-earning degrees.

I'm on of the oldest dudes on this site...let me save you some time and tell you what it took me 30+ years to take to heart: follow your bliss. Find something that you love to do and then figure out a way to get paid to do it.

Better to fail at something you love than to succeed at something you hate.
