In my review I try to articulate why I think he pulled back in that regard. It’s not self censoring, but rather him attempting to turn it into something different. He knew he could never top the original trailer.

I’m seeing so many reviews saying this is like a late 90’s/early 2000’s slasher. Not at all. That’s basically every mainstream slasher since then. The really refreshing thing about it is that it escapes that mold. It’s deliberately avoiding trying to be another Scream. If it weren’t for the technology and generational differences—it’d just be a slasher from 1981. It feels like Happy Birthday To Me, The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine, and even a little bit of Pieces still.

I definitely felt a lot of comparisons to the og My Bloody Valentine. I'd love to see Eli Roth make more slashers cause this might be his best work (along with Hostel) tbh.
