Because it's the most basic service possible and hiding it behind a paywall only kills certification and makes information even more difficult to get; I wouldn't be surprised if that's the point: making it harder to know if what you read is real or not.

Every digital platform should be free, then eventually forced to clutter the app with ads to maintain server costs - till the audience gets tired of those ads and move on to a new platform.
