The articles linked itt have Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as founders in 2003. This link just lists Elon as an investor with his first round of funding in 2004. If I'm going off this, a f***ing venture capitalist firm that also invested in 2004 is a co-founder of Tesla as well.

Tesla was founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in July 2003, originally under the name Tesla Motors. In February 2004, the company raised $7.5 million in Series A funding, with $6.5 million of that coming from Elon Musk. Elon’s investment in Tesla made him the largest shareholder in the company and he subsequently was given a late co-founder title and became its Chairman. Since 2008, Elon Musk has served as the CEO of Tesla.
July 2003 - February 2004 is not long at all when he invested all that money
And they never even sold a single car before he became CEO in 2008...
