US would be the type of people to do that s***, but I think there has to be an extreme reason to do it that they would financially benefit from in future years

nah its definitely not a cold war level battle at least yet. Just a general great power rivalry. There's no harsh 2 sided ideological battle with the world splitting up into blocs. doubt there will be proxy wars either. Just these small competitions with arms, tech, etc... (China has already won tech quite easily lol)
China wants to be a leader but they're definitely trying to make global politics multi-polar rather than strict bipolarity of the CW. Sure the U.S will make their challenge at some point but they've basically let China do whatever they want for years now.

China hasn't been "communist" for a while they've just never changed their party name.
They mix a few ideas but they've embraced capitalist ideas and economy since Deng Xiaoping took over in the 80's. Like just look at every major company producing there its a haven for them lol
