I just need relegation to really affect the sort of clubs going for this format, because they more or less have a closed system in their domestic leagues already. If the last 15 or so years of mismanagement can't break either Arsenal or United, what hope does football have as it is?

United aren't broken at all, they've spent more than anyone else bar City since Ferguson left. They've gotten away with things most football clubs would only dream of getting away with in terms of financial mismanagement.

united and arsenal have been massively successful for years and built up their reputation worldwide, with that comes money and the ability to acquire players that would prevent relegation from happening. that is the reward for continued success and having a legitimate global following.

the current setup isnt perfect, and the clubs with the most money still dominate, but on their day any club can beat anyone. thats the magic of football.

losing is meant to hurt, thats what makes winning so great. if there is no penalty for losing then there is no satisfaction around winning. whats the point? a closed shop is so fundamentally wrong, its the complete opposite of what football means to me and most people.
