I think critic bait is a real phenomenon however I don’t think the artist is the culprit. It’s more so a reflection of the critics and what they gravitate to. If I had to describe what that is, probably albums that are well thought out thematically and tell a story and have some level of messaging. Which is kinda dumb to just reduce that to “critic bait.”

While it's used pretty much as a way to slander an artist you don't like, I do think it's a real thing. There's definitely artist out there that make music in mind of how it can appeal to critics.

critic bait is definitely more prominent in the movie industry because of the nature of studios and their budgeting. oscar bait is a valid characteristic of some movies because movies are being made to be appealing to various audiences. theres rarely if ever a consumer group for music albums
