Not even attempting to make slaps and just leveraging your fame and position to get away with making music that white critics can't not like, but won't listen to.

Lame Registration was critic bait literally lol, think about it

    dog take

  • These days, critic bait is less about the actual music and more about how the mainstream media and critics paid off by them perceive the artist.

Take Eminem for example. I know Eminem isn't in his glory years anymore but TDOSS getting a Metacritic score of 46 is some f***ing bullshit.

And I don't even think it's a top 5 rap album of this year but there's no way in hell that album should be ranked lower than Revival. It should've been at least rated at the level of Music To Be Murdered By.

Also, we all know Donda got panned by certain critics solely over DaBaby/Manson and that one critic who claimed that he needed more female features.

Critics also tend not to jive with Future that well because he ticks off many in the "Shea Butter" and feminist crowd who see him as a toxic person so that's why Future rarely gets reviews averaging above 70 these days.

In essence, many critics will try to "punch down" on artists who they feel aren't acceptable enough for their image while grading many artists with safe reputations and "artsy" personas on a curve.

You also have the "stan culture" influence in critics too like when that Rolling Stone review from an open Swiftie gave TTPD a grand score just because he wanted Taylor to have a good score. That's just plain unacceptable and a true review company would've bushed a nigga who openly did that.

Critic bait isn't really a real thing in the same way as Oscar bait because it's more based on the artists themselves than the music often.

It’s what they call socially conscious or experimental music. They think every rapper should be ignorant and make party music

It's basically music that critics can't 'not like' or else they'll look insensitive to culture and out of touch.

  • Music that makes niggas feel uncomfortable bc they think music is just for “the aux/bitches” or strategically trying to get hits

Post 2010’s since you said no artist names lol

  • One listen classic with strings and orchestra and trumpets and cinematix vibes + white guilt

  • Them nerd raps

Like that lame skits that TDE artist just dropped, someone gotta tell her to drop some bangers and that’s it let the music talk
