'War... war never changes'

Do you prefer the games before or after Bethesda took over? Whatever you want to discuss, this is the general for it, so turn the radio on, crack open an ice-cold Nuka-Cola and enjoy.

Saving a first page spot for fallout 5 in 2031
are the first 2 games hard
they’re on gamepass and i kinda wanna try them
They're hard in that they're extremely archaic. Personally I love games in the isometric classic RPG style but I grew up playing those. If you are familiar with how Dungeons & Dragons plays you might be able to understand how to play the first two games and Fallout Tactics. Honestly, it's probably best to look at those three Fallout games as tactical RPGs. If you know what you're getting into with that genre then those Fallout games should be pretty comfortable to play.
I still think those games are good, but I can totally understand why most people wouldn't want to go back to them. I will say this though, it's amazing how well they translated the feel and gameplay of the OG Fallout games and evolved them for Fallout 3. All the charm in regards to characters, dialogue, quests, etc that you can find in Fallout 3 can be found in Fallout 1 and 2. It's just not first person or in 3D.
Also with Gamepass I'm assuming you'll be able to play them on PC which is how I would recommend playing them. I don't know how well mods work with games on Gamepass, but I highly recommend downloading the Fixt mod and a hi-res patch. I think Fixt already comes with a built in hi-res patch, but I can't remember it's been a minute since I've played Fallout 1&2. The Fixt mod adds a ton of QOL improvements to make the game play like a more modern game. The hi-res patch also makes the game look a bit less like pixel vomit on your screen.
Been playing 3 and it's really good, but going back to New Vegas (played that one first) and it's no contest, the world, the quests, the characters, everything feels so much richer
I disagree with people who say 3 is a flat-out bad game though, it's a bit more shallow but it's still got a great world to explore and crazy good atmosphere, it can straight-up turn into a horror game when it wants to, had my first gaming jumpscare in ages playing it
New Vegas the best fallout of all time
to think they made all that s*** in 18 months
obsidian got a lot of s*** for how the game released but jfc i can't imagine crafting such a world in that timespan.

lowkey wish 3 wasn't completely f***ed on newer hardware
i mean yeah we got TTW and stuff but i'd like to keep my NV mod load order separate lol
classic, even though 4 and 76 were kind nightmarish.
despite the settlements 4 really wasn't all that bad
I like the games but dropped the series after finishing 4. Got too buggy and tedious to get those trophies
Been playing more lately and I definitely think the radio in NV is way better than in 3, it feels more atmospheric and relevant to your environment, there are some great tracks in 3 for sure, but Radio New Vegas is nothing but bangers
I think it has a lot to do with Bethesda's generalised post-apocalyptic 1950s nostalgia approach vs Obsidian's focus on how humanity would try and rebuild itself in the face of the apocalypse. You can really imagine the people in NV connecting with these simple country tunes because they're about subjects that would arise at any point in human history; love, heartbreak, having a Big Iron on your hip, but 3 feels more like 'Wasn't old music wacky?' with tracks like Butcher Pete
Miss the days of getting lost in the wasteland last time I installed New Vegas I explored a lot more than I did as a kid and it was great. I think it was during first lockdown
is a tale of two wastelands good for a first gameplay?
Don’t see why not. If anything it’s way more convenient.
