Your point and how it relates to the smiths are two very different things. You’re entirely ignoring the unique sounds and voice singers and musicians bring to their songs. Marr's tone is as unique as Liz’s voice. Morrissey’s emotional yet clever outlook is as unique as the Cocteau Twin guitar playing.

But if we're going that route.

The Cocteau twins opted for a song format and style that wasn't been done before. Coming from Joy Division's slower tracks as well as the Banshees darkest material they've mixed it with psychedelics and church music (not in the gothic way Dead Can Dance did tho) but rather introverted & surreal. The songs are also different in structure and approach. Close to a dark form of New Age. They were probably far more influential than their name recognition.

The Smiths updated Post Punk with their special way of infusing it with melodic melodramatic songs of the 50s as well as adding Marr's somewhat dreamy yet Byrds-like guitar style. Nothing small, but I think that Cocteau Twins have them beat in that department.
