His songs often deal with the desire to break societal/moral conventions and reach that sort of utopian glory in which the individual can do whatever they please. However, there is a deep sense of frustration lying underneath all of these lyrics. Even those which aren't as obvious as in that song. His music represents a revolt against a perceived damnation that is prevalent in pretty much all of rock even though not necessarily as explicit. His extremely pompous music is often filled with a deep sense of melancholy which makes it so appealing to me. On top of that you have very intricate arrangements and melodies as well as insanely sophisticated production. Steinman doesn't care about being corny at all. His best music feels to me as if he puts everything into it.

I'd def agree with the stylistic connection to Springsteen and Spector tho.
