Its a sad situation, you literally have Putin leading charge to takeover another country. Idk how far he's gonna go because I wouldn't be surprised if someone within the Russian government takes Putin out before this turns into a world war but its a delicate situation if were talkin the USA place in this.
Clearly were not going to war with Russia for obvious reasons, I doubt Putin gives a s*** about "sanctions" and im sure China is looming in the background looking to see how they can make a move on their countries too.

where are the shades of grey thereI’m talking about the historical material context for why Russia is doing what they’re doing. NATO has been illegally expanding around the Russian border for years. Putin has been attempting to settle this diplomatically for a long time but keeps getting shut down. We staged a coup in 2014 in the Ukraine to install a different leader from who was democratically elected to serve our interests. We funded actual neo nazi’s over there who unlike here seriously hold real political power in that county. We literally bombed Somalia a couple days ago but you won’t hear that on the news. This isn’t a justification for what Putin is doing but it contextualizes it beyond just “dictator man went crazy”.

NATO promised not to expand into Eastern Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union. It shouldn’t even exist in the first place. It was always a justification to expand the U.S empire and the fear of Stalinist Communism was just an excuse. It lost its function in the 90’s.

Putin might not care about the sanctions but the oligarchs will. I dunno enough about the power dynamics there to predict how that will play for him but I can't imagine it goes well if it lasts for much longer

I think all the context I provided is essential to understanding that and reducing it to simply Putin being crazy and bad is foolish. The U.S. plays a role in this and it’s not “whataboutism” to highlight what we’ve done to escalate things towards this point.
