I haven't had time to look at the news really but my gf showed me a video of Russian fighter jets shooting f***ing missiles at a neighborhood where are the shades of grey there

    Seriously

Talking about individual actors justification when a***yzing historical events is a waste of time. We’re talking about why exactly something is happening. I think all the context I provided is essential to understanding that and reducing it to simply Putin being crazy and bad is foolish. The U.S. plays a role in this and it’s not “whataboutism” to highlight what we’ve done to escalate things towards this point.

The US certainly played a role in attempting to withhold half a billion dollars in military funding from Ukraine a couple years ago

Okay but Putin's ego is far more of a reason that thousands of people are dying than any of that context. Can write as much as you want about NATO being a despicable organisation but that's not what's currently killing people in Ukraine. They haven't driven Putin to this. This didn't have to happen

yeah that line of logic/context might hit me differently if it was more limited military action centered on the disputed territories instead of a massive conventional invasion including the assault on one of the biggest cites in europe

im not really sure what the "mainstream media" type angle is that is probably simplifying it a lot but the "putin crazy and bad" view seems to be heavily referencing his own words recently like the stuff where he was calling the ukrainian leadership d*** addicts and nazis and pretty much saying ukraine shouldnt even exist. not like he gave some nuanced explanation involving US nato involvement or something

Yeah exactly this. For what it's worth Fidelio is right about the US and NATOs increasing destabilisation and aggression in the area, and that context is important. But this is a full blown invasion ffs

Would he have not done this ages ago if NATO didn't exist? What European Army could withstand Russia on their own?

yeah i think i get what he is saying but also dont really get the idea that places like estonia would just be totally safe if nato didnt exist because then russia would play nice

Yeah I've heard a lot of Eastern European perspectives over the years and man do they hate the Russians and they would gladly take a lesser evil like America and NATO any day. Especially the ones that hated them enough to f*** off to North America.

You could argue this is just empty moralism that obfuscates the mechanisms that put this into motion. It’s almost a useless way of evaluating anything that’s actually happening when you’re discussing individual choices. It’s like putting 100% of the blame on Bush as the bloodthirsty brains behind Iraq and Afghanistan when it’s the entire neocon establishment and military industrial complex before and after him that had been pressuring leaders into making those decisions and those wars have even less precedent to contextualize them. Putin has been attempting peace talks regarding the Ukraine for a long time and the U.S. shuts them down. Again the war is wrong, he shouldn’t be doing this. It’s horrible, but pretending like it’s out of the blue and couldn’t have been prevented is absurd.

Obviously Fidelio out here playing devil's advocate as usual and I was just curious what take he could possibly have

It’s not playing devils advocate. It’s basic ass foreign policy a***ysis that every anti war organization is echoing. Did you even watch the Chomsky video I sent you that further contextualizes things.

Snowblind is so good top 3 Sabbath track for me. Under the Sun has a dope heavy riff too. “Every day just comes and goes life is one long overdose”

Listen again I need to be clear, Putin is an imperialist piece of s*** and his actions are unacceptable but anyone who’s anti war already knows this. It’s difficult to try to discuss this without feeding into fake information coming from both Russia and the U.S. Still it’s obvious stuff like Snake Island and the Ghost of Kyiv is total propaganda.
