Replay value is one of the biggest indicators of a great album and his 1 listen style of reviews definitely don't help his credibility... even though his criteria is based on original ideas, I feel multiple listens should be had to really take in an album...

Yeah I don't think a single one of my absolute favourite albums hit on first listen. Anything with staying power needs acclimation.

nah. I don't think that's that necessary if you have enough context. Only if it appears confusing or just impenetrable tbh. Living with a work is something different. However, this doesn't mean repeated listens cannot change the opinion.

For example, if you're actively listening to Die Lit about 3 times after having listened to many trap releases there shouldn't be many problems grasping the sounds.

he had plenty of these names mentioned in his histories for a decade though. He's just updating them now.

agree to disagree. Seriously, the more original the harder to get into (the further away from what you usually listen to or "feel") in general because your brain has to understand the sounds and structures.

Ok so scaruffi recently gave lil peep a 7.5 and we can agree that his reviews are based on innovation/ original ideas, right? 7.5 is pretty much the highest he'll go for hip hop... I don't personally think Part One is a very difficult album to get into. Unless you don't like depressing lyrics, the music itself is catchy and relatively straightforward.

There are probably some dumbass dumbed down albums out there that are hard to get into and some albums with incredible innovations that are easy to get into. I don't believe the harder to get into it, the more innovative it is... literally everybody views an album differently and f*** a scaruffi algorithm that would try to convince me otherwise

read what i edited in and that should explain it. Ask yourself what you listen to the most. It's not clear cut on one factor. I think that there are miltiole factors.

I still think I could find plenty of examples where a less innovative album may be harder to get into than one with more innovations.

Here's something, take the 2 most celebrated albums of the decade, TPAB vs MBDTF. Forget the f***ing Fantano Drones and RYM lames. If you played both those albums to someone with no biases towards either artist, I bet you the more innovative record, MBDTF, would get favored more. TPAB is one of those albums that may try super hard to be unique/ innovative and fail (mostly) whereas MBDTF has some absolute global hits that are catchy af (AOTL, Power) but are also super interesting and creative in the realm of hip hop... and while people may recognize something unique about it, those innovations don't mean it has to be a challenging listen. Kendrick, on TPAB, is biting alot if other sounds that came before him, which may create a facade of innovation, but I think the average listener would be less drawn to it than MBDTF (assuming the non bias towards his celebrity ofc)

catchy melodies are not innovative by nature and there is a lot more to the music than just being catchy. Catchy melodies therefore might make it easier to get into something but it took me quite a bit to fully grasp what is going on in Power or All Of The Lights.

TPAB on the other hand worked really because of all the facade that sold it as a "masterpiece". It perfectly fit into preconceived notions of what constitutes such a thing (also, I never thought the album was bad or anything. Just extremely overrated.). Btw MBDTF too.

Well, I was simply giving a counter-example to "the more innovative, the harder to get into". I get what he's saying and for a lot of cases it's true but if I took some time I could find quite a few examples proving against that theory. MBDTF vs TPAB was just the first thing that popped up into my head

Not everybody thinks about it that deeply though. I get it now, though, you were arguing from a perspective of me or you who will notice the nuances over time. I was trying to simply point out that a majority of people don't think about those things and the catchier album will be more flocked to regardless of people's knowledge on music

It was agree to disagree but we were arguing different points. I do agree with you on that type of perspective
