Even if the outro overstays its welcome imo, Roddy's performance is so damn goat. Ye's delivery is infectious.
The song is so life affirming. Just puts a giant smile on my face as soon as the first note plays

I didnt enjoy a lot of JIK when it came out, but a few months later i grew to love most of it. Everything We Need and Follow God are amazing. Water, Jesus Is Lord, and God Is are some ultimate zone out songs.
Weirdly, Use This Gospel is the song i rarely go back to on that album. Meanwhile, Every Hour went from "goddamn this is annoying" to being stuck in my head for weeks (in a good way) lol
But i dont care for Selah. Never have and i dont ever see that changing

I didnt enjoy a lot of JIK when it came out, but a few months later i grew to love most of it. Everything We Need and Follow God are amazing. Water, Jesus Is Lord, and God Is are some ultimate zone out songs.
Weirdly, Use This Gospel is the song i rarely go back to on that album. Meanwhile, Every Hour went from "goddamn this is annoying" to being stuck in my head for weeks (in a good way) lol
But i dont care for Selah. Never have and i dont ever see that changing

I also honestly think my coming around to JIK (and to an extent, my love for Donda) is helped by the fact that those 2 albums have a good chunk of the limited number of Kanye songs I can play in the car with my husband without him getting annoyed or complaining.
He never listened to Rap much, outside of radio/club hits from the 90s and 2000s, and he's too set in his ways now to have the patience to hear a lot of Rap he's never heard — let alone dozens of Kanye songs all at once lol.
He's a classically trained singer and tends to only listen to things he can sing along to. He also grew up particpating a lot in church functiona and chaperoning youth group trips.
So all the harmonies, melodies, and soul-singing aspects of JIK and Donda meshed with him nicely and he's sings along to any of the songs i play from them.

My husband's totally shamelessness when it comes to singing loudly in the car with me, or in front of literally anyone, is dead ass something i deeply envy. I only feel comfortable singing along to music around people when I'm halfway to blackout drunk.
I've been with this man for the better part of a decade and i still have never sang in the car with him lol. But when im alone i will belt out s*** like no tomorrow

in a way the Ken Burns Country Music documentary Lordie made me watch gave me a better understanding and... maybe not appreciation but just acceptance of the way religion and music have have merged together with society down south in really complex way. Really crazy and interesting how country music is a way of life down there in a way that none of the other genres are anywhere else really.Yeah it goes pretty far back with that. But i think religion blending with that genre is more of an extension, or byproduct of christianity (mostly baptist) being ingrained in southern culture in general.
I mean, this is basically a pseudo-"Western" set in the South, that is about about Southern community and Christianity in equal parts. Even the way they sing the title song sounds like it could easily turn into a Country ballad:
