Lord made me watch Ken Burns Country Music documentary and it was an astounding rec. will change your whole perception on not just country but 'merica

i dont really watch too many of the video essay type things, i prefer the channels of old dudes just talking about their massive record collection like these 2. more experience and a different kind of knowledge i cant really get from the video essays

ill finish the rest one day, i think i did the first 3 episodes and stopped when my big country phase was ending.

what I saw of Ken Burns Jazz was great too but I stopped before it apparently went off the rails with the traditionalism in the post-bebop era. apparently all-but ignoring some of the bigger innovators of the 50s/60s

the beginning part where it was talking about "the rub" concept really stuck with me

I think if you look at a lot of archival interviews from back in the day aloooota people thought they were p**** ass kid music that was gonna disappear any day. Even interviews from their peers are surprisingly dismissive.

there are only a few guys i really watch, and not all the time either. its nice to have the more conversational and friendly tone and hear about their connections with it. instead of reading like a formal history its nice to hear a music obsessed old dude talk about how he felt when something came out in 1970 etc.

sometimes i skip around though since they dont really edit the videos much and can kinda ramble

Yeah I love talking to boomers about that stuff so I guess I would dig that but I've just never searched it out

still appealed to a broad enough people just through the sheer force of it, had metal guys like Ozzy and Lemmy worshiping

and honestly just appealing to women and children more than Doors or almost any rock band gives them a broad reach to start with

I got stacks of books on movies and music I got bored sitting there watching people talk about stuff and would rather have music playing when I'm doing chores or whatever

the origins part of the Jazz one was similarly great, describing the unique set of circumstances and influences in New Orleans that could have never happened in another place or time
