I think those songs are way better than Imagine and I've heard them all countless times. It's not a hot take to call Imagine a snoozefest.

Boring is one thing. S***e is a different level.

I will admit though that when all those celebs sang Imagine back when covid started I actually despised the song. When I think about it divorced of all of its context I think it’s totally fine.

I hate the lyrics so much the whole thing is just utter nonsense. Add that to the fact that it is pretty boring as well and yeah I think it fully qualifies as s***e

It's difficult to fully divorce it from a cover like that because the whole song perfectly embodies that out of touch celebrity take on the world's ills

I would also describe Bohemian Rhapsody, and everything else Queen ever did, as COMPLETELY S***E

What do you think of the new Will Sheff solo track? Seems alright to me but I feel like it lacks the bite of the best Okkervil River songs

I definitely agree. I’d put Paul on the all time singers list but high at all

I'd put him at the top of my all-time favorite bass players and I focus very heavily on the bass

One of the best music videos ever. Budget had to be hefty

I thought it seemed like a pretty wicked concept Xzibit and Snoop ended up being my first concert too and X was insane

Why does MBDTF get criticized for being overproduced even though LR fits that description much better.

Because LR still had backpack vibes

within the context of rock music i dont think the bass playing gets a whole lot better than mccartney's. and ringo is a pretty archetypal example of the ideal role of rock drummer too a lot of the time (and occasional sloppiness can fit their songs) of course theyre not as good as jazz goats and things like that but the playing suits the songwriting for rock/pop music. never thought harrisons lead guitar during beatles was anything particularly great tbh outside of a few small moments. (mccartney/lennon also had some nice guitar parts).

i think people can conflate being skilled at an instrument vs playing parts perfect for the song, especially people that aren't musicians themselves. language like saying someone is "better" is just vague and can mean different things depending on the context.

With rock and roll there's kind of an alternate scale whete the less you know the better you are sometimes. That's why Neil made Nils Lofgren play piano on after the Gold Rush instead of guitar which was the instrument he knew how to play.

Paul McCartney in that video probably means hes not that skilled of a player but the people in the comments are just thinking "wow, hes so humble because the piano part sounds great on let it be!"

Ray Davies says he writes on the piano too because hes not very good and youre not supposed to get that fancy with rock and roll anyways or something

I have no idea what he’s going for here but I don’t care for it much. Also have you ever heard Album Of The Year by The Good Life, I think it captures the same spirit as Okkervil River’s best stuff. One of my favorite records of the 2000’s.

I hate how brits say s***e instead of s***.

most peoples negative takes on popular classic words can be boiled down to "im a c*** full of s***e m8"

Been getting way back into Modest Mouse again. Lonesome Crowded West finally clicked with me after years of being 100% Moon and Antarctica. Now I realize both are masterpieces.

I don't think that band released a single bad song from 1996 to 2001. Every single one is intense and purposeful.

    such an amazing run

Imagine does have a ridiculously beautiful melody and vocal just too bad he decided clobber you with such straightforward and impossibly idealistic lyrics. Should've got Dylan to help him finesse it.

Yeah it’s like he was trying to do his own version of Let It Be but tacked on his worldly idealism onto it a bit too much. It certainly softens the song in a negative way. I feel like a cover of it sung in a different language would work better.

Makes me wish there was a 1968 demo version of it from back when he was more artful and cryptic with it like with the jealous guy/natures child

Honestly if someone could pull off a big melodramatic piano ballad like that around this time it would have been Brian Wilson. I think he’d have made that melody soar without sounding cheap.
