They tried to fix the top charts with a new algorithm last year but it honestly it’s worse than it was before
didnt they lessen the popularity weight or something? without their "fix" i bet itd be worse tbh
i think the site was always going to be weirdly affected by the massive growth in the past few years. im honestly bewildered at how huge some of the rating numbers are, like Death Grips having 45k. i feel like 10k used to the boundary for "wow thats a lot of ratings" but then i blinked and it quadrupled
pretty sure MBDTF was like #15 or something at one point and a few of his others were top 100. along with being one of the most rated artists on the site. definitely qualifies as a RYM darling honestly it just doesnt outweigh how much of a darling he is/was with music nerds in general
just checked and he's still got #28 (4.09), #59 (4.08), #107 (4.01), #309, #517 which is likely one of the stronger showings from an artist
Higher than I thought

If remember correctly, they also did something where the age of albums matter too. For instance, a newer album with a slightly lower average would rank ahead of an older one for some reason.

This is an awful change

im also kinda unsure how I feel about the idea of older/inactive accounts being "deweighted" compared to others. i mean those older accounts are already so outnumbered by newer ones with similar tastes to each other, is it really that bad to allow some dude's old rating from 2005 or 2010 to stand on equal weight to a new one?
i didnt hear anything about that change you mentioned tbh

they did this cuz ppl kept complaining about how "classic" rap records from the 2000s like grodt and lil wayne were rated so badly because of the hate from the og accounts. I agree its pretty stupid
All of these albums you're talking about are great
Now if In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was the new #1...

its better than every album in the actual top 10

No not TPAB
Igor and Blonde are going to be in the top 10 within 5 years
I used to be such an Igor defender because KTT is unreasonable about Tyler but man I don't it being ranked as the best soul album ever or wtf
Blonde deserves whatever high ranking it gets, it's a bold weird and innovative album for such a popular artist and its best tracks are essential

i have more of a problem with poor genre tagging than rankings
a lot of people just vote for a genre because they read the name and think "yeah this sounds like spacey rock, so its space rock!" while having no idea what the actual genre is. i always click peoples profiles when they vote stupidly and see that theyve never even heard an album from the genre theyre voting for
also heres an example

Deathspell probably has more fives and a more recent rating midway point

Would love to hear your reasoning behind Blonde being innovative. To me it's just a lo-fi soul album with an 'edge' to it

I hear 250+ albums a year and have rated 10,000+ albums and haven't heard anything that quite sounds like Blonde. It's its own little universe. Maybe that doesn't make it "innovative" but it is unique

i like everything up to and including Nights but never had much care for everything after that
its bizarre how much RYM managed to grow while keeping some aspects of the site SO outdated. like you can't even have a conversation in the genre comment box because theres no notifications, youd literally have to keep coming back to check if someone responded to you
i respect the site owner a lot but the way they announced the big "sonemic" overhaul was a bit wild. its been like 10 years since that announcement and they have made big updates tbf but it just feels kinda weird. cant blame them for changing their mind on the original vision i guess but i still feel a few obvious spots have needed enhancement forever

The stuff before Nights builds me up and the stuff after Nights breaks me down.
White Ferrari and Godspeed get me f***ed up

thatt was my point they factor in age of albums. I wasn't making an argument for one way or the other

It's not really age of albums, it's popularity with the userbase, which skews younger all the time. Usually that means newer albums get a bump but sometimes older stuff pops off on TikTok or whatever and gets a massive bump
Sorry to be pedantic
