His singing is what made them so universal

Most of the arguments I've seen against Radiohead online and IRL have been Thom's voice. So i guess it's wither you love it or you hate it.

I don't find it strange at all. If you don't like Thom Yorke's weepy moaning then why would somebody like Radiohead at all? Imo his singing is the weakest link of all their music.

One of the best vocalists working today in my opinion. I think some of you are out of your mind thinking there’s anything wrong with his voice.

I don't think it's that crazy to think his voice is not for everyone dude. It works sometimes for me and sometimes it doesn't. Again, I really like how it fits on Amwsiac so that's why it's my favorite of theirs

I think it’s crazy because there’s nothing remotely strange about it. He’s not Bob Dylan or Jeff Magnum or even a Neil Young type. It’s just a guy going into traditional falsetto a lot. Most people who hear something like Fake Plastic Trees usually are struck by how pretty he sounds. The ones that are alienated by his voice were normally hard rock fans who were digging Pearl Jam and Nirvana at the time. Thom even said he was afraid to start singing like that early on because people would think he would sound wimpy or overly vulnerable. It was when he went to a Jeff Buckley show that he changed his outlook on it. Anyone who’s listened to male vocalists like that shouldn’t find anything odd about Thom’s voice. There’s a million indie rock vocalists now that sound like that. It was only ever off putting for dude bro douchebags in 1994, but if you’re even remotely accustomed to the last 30 or so years of alternative rock—it shouldn’t bother you at all.

mostly in your corner on this one dude but Thom's voice is far from universally loved. Internet is just a Radiohead jerk off fest so a lotta people will quickly come to their defense. Most of my music discussion is online so I'm in the minority on them overall, but almost everybody I've crossed paths with who are really into music have not been Radiohead fans at all. I've met more Velvet fans than RH fans lmao

i think hes great but definitely understand people not liking the voice as much. im not in the mood for it 100% of the time anyway and there are a few styles they do where i dont care for the vocals as much

i think its that + the general mood of the music, a lot of people think theyre depressing and dont like that

Never said I was against his voice, I'm just letting you know the primary argument I've seen against the band broski. And I think you answered your own question when you used the word 'wimpy'.

yeah i agree with this completely but also think thats part of the reason why some might not like him

its not like a bob dylan thing where people would go "wtf this guy cant sing" its more just the fact they dont like that type of rock music. or maybe they can tolerate the dollar store pop version Chris Martin

The internet has not been a Radiohead jerk off fest in like a decade. You’re living in a very dated conception of what the modern online music sphere is like. It’s why your opinions on them are so painfully reactive. Yeah you’d be dropping really interesting takes on Reddit in like 2014.

man i'm literally agreeing for the most part. You're being painfully reactive to someone who' just tryna explain why RH might not be for everybody. F*** off with that reddit s***, I can't have an opinion? You don't have to look too far to find RH cock-gobbling on the internet bro.

I don't mean they're universally loved for their discography but they have several songs where a pub/party/concert whatever big group of people could easily do a big singalong with a couple of their classics and you would have to be one salty son of a b**** to sit there with your arms crossed ignoring the beauty of those moments and pretending you don't know the lyrics

Even I will join in on Don't Stop Believing or some s*** in those situations

I've never been good at memorizing lyrics so maybe I'm that guy.

But that’s the thing though — all the bands accused of being Radiohead rip-offs in the post Britpop era like Muse, Travis, and Coldplay were always praised early on at the very least for their strong vocalists and their vocalists were being compared to Thom. Clearly the critical consequences was even if they’re not very good bands they at least have capable singers. I get why a guy who only listens to Van Halen and Alice In Chains would not like Thom’s voice. What I don’t get is why anyone on here—who’s expanded beyond that limited frame of reference of what rock sounds like—would find anything remotely odd or alienating about his vocals. I’m really not trying to seem overly defensive. I just don’t comprehend it.

Fidelio calling my views outdated and reactive when I was literally agreeing for the most part and just explaining my personal interactions with people on RH. He is literally proving himself to be the RH d*** rider that I'm referring to. Radiohead is still widely loved on the internet. Calling it a decade old talking point is just plain wrong and misguided. Headass

Him calling anybody that can't dig a Thom type singer in the 90s a douchebag was about as overboard as you having no respect for radiohead beyond 3 albums
