Early early punk maybe. Like Ramones stuff, like Aruji said. By the time you get to bands like Black Flag and Discharge it became something else.

For the most part it either went in that direction or the Joy Division/Cure/Smiths direction. The Clash seem like the ultimate kitsch-y punk band.
For me personally when I think "punk" my mind goes to 80s hardcore

that’s one of the many reasons it doesn’t make sense when someone criticized art, specifically film, for being “campy”

No offense to my gay homies, but they sort of embraced it so hard that it became absorbed by the mainstream where all of its John Waters-esq edges were sanded off and it ultimately turned it into this ironically detached cutesy junk targeted exclusively to them. S*** like M3GAN is what you get now.
