they're really great imo. second best thing to come out of the 4th generation groups

this was their first single/most popular song other than antifragile

unless we're considering Loona 4th gen though I put them more at 3rd gen or between 3rd and 4th.

Would take way too long to go through them but Girls Generation/Wonder Girls/Shinee were 2nd gen. Red Velvet/Blackpink/BTS/Twice/Got7 etc. were 3rd Generation, 4th gen are the newer groups from 2018 to now, and 1st gen are a bunch of seminal groups you (and I tbh) haven't heard of.

Why is 2018 the year when the new generation starts was there a bunch of big new groups or new style

you're asking difficult questions and not sure I have all the answers. But the generations/eras are defined by certain aesthetic and characteristic shifts/evolutions in terms of music/pop culture/industry shifts/concepts/fashion. They are probably assigned in retrospect the way we assign historical eras/epochs to certain time periods in retrospect. And it's all contentious but not terribly important. A new generation may start while the previous one is still going on, and then it all becomes clearer when looking back at it, not looking at it directly.

It’s probably like emo where generations/waves are mostly a load of bullshit but people still love obsessing over them.
