you're asking difficult questions and not sure I have all the answers. But the generations/eras are defined by certain aesthetic and characteristic shifts/evolutions in terms of music/pop culture/industry shifts/concepts/fashion. They are probably assigned in retrospect the way we assign historical eras/epochs to certain time periods in retrospect. And it's all contentious but not terribly important. A new generation may start while the previous one is still going on, and then it all becomes clearer when looking back at it, not looking at it directly.

The impression I used to have when I followed kpop was it was more to do with when the biggest companies debuted their new boy/girl groups - at least for 3rd and 4th gen

I can't think of a better example of skits ruining a 'Golden age' hip-hop album than 3 Feet High and Rising. So many amazing songs interrupted by absolute nonsense.

Ruining is a strong word when 3 feet high and rising is still one of the very best hip hop albums

Anyone seen the 1927 napoleon film? I've seen it mentioned a lot recently with the new ridley scott film coming up... but the 5 hr + run time is a bit intimidating, especially for home viewing (way too susceptible to distraction at home)

yeah that might also be the case, and I think it has to do with group contracts which generally last around 7 years, but i've also read that generations are decided retrospectively

I think we watched it in film school but I snuck out of the theater cuz I was bored

Ok true ruin is harsh, they feel unnecessary though. The songs themselves are incredible front to back so maybe I'm being nitpicky and biased

First couple hours are great but it lost me eventually. Worth a look for the snowball fight at the beginning tbh.

school spirit skit --> school spirit

Like with a lot of CD's kinda tongue in cheek content, the barrage of skits in that section feels intentionally ridiculous . Like both embracing and satirizing the excess of skits in hip hop for much of its history. Helps that they're hilarious and they never get old imo.

You’d think Eminem would have the corniest ones, but I actually really love all the ones on MMLP. The one that leads into The Way I Am is perfect.

“I can’t sell this right, you’re rapping about homosexuals and Vicodin”.

    lol
